    Hello,

I have been looking around on this forum for a while on people's experiences of having their faulty XPS systems exchanged and it seems some go bad, others go well. I was hoping perhaps some of you could give me some advice on the system exchange process.

Recently my M1530 stopped working, and the repair depot determined it was beyond economical repair. So, after waiting for roughly a week after the assessment I finally decided to call and see what was going on. They said the system exchange had not been initiated yet for some reason, but the man i spoke to said he could initiate the exchange while I was talking to him.

He said that currently, he could offer me a Dell studio xps 1647, probably the same one that is listed here: http://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineSales/Online/InventorySearch.aspx?brandId=2201&c=us&cs=22&fid=1074&l=en&s=dfh

It seems like a pretty fair upgrade, the components are all superior to my current M1530 with an 8600gt, t9300 dual core processor, 4gb memory, etc. However, I like to play video games a lot and am also planning on going into a field in which it would be to my advantage to have a laptop that offers a strong graphics solution.

So I did some research on what Dell offers while talking to Technical Support and found that Dell has a line of laptops called Alienware, and it seems these laptops are quite powerful. I figured since the warranty says they guarantee replacing your unit with a system of equal or greater value, that for the amount I paid for the original laptop(~1700 w/o warrantee price) I could get a strong Alienware m15x rig.

So i brought up this possible alternative to him, and he tried talking to some other people in his department to see if it would be possible to get me the Alienware instead of the 1647 and said unfortunately his department is currently limited to offering 1640's and 1647's for replacement.

I tried to call tech support again and talked to people who were in Europe instead of India and they said the same thing. I was wondering if you guys think there is any possible way to get Dell to replace my system with an Alienware instead of a Dell XPS 1647.

I went through quite a few threads where I found that many people got their faulty M1530's replaced with Alienwares, and found it strange that this was not possible for me.

Thanks or your time and help, I appreciate it.

Sandy Bridge models being sold right now are only the high end. Mainstream should be released later.

See if you can get bumped up to the new XPS line, avoid the SXPS.

Ah. I was not aware of this. However, I would bump into the same problem. When I spoke to technical assistant departments both in Europe and India, they both specifically mentioned that their only options to replace broken m1530's is currently the sxps line. Do you suppose there is any way to convince Dell to bump me to the new XPS 15. For example, maybe I would have to go through a different department, talk to a higher up, etc...?

I would assume so. SXPS has had their share of problems, see if you can use that as leverage for a new XPS as many SXPS owners have been bumped up to the new XPS line. I think there were a couple case numbers about people going from M1x30 line to SXPS to new XPS line lol

I ended up talking to the tech support again today and really pushed for an Alienware replacement. However, the tech support and her manager said the best they could to is have a new xps 15 manufactured for me. I will be getting the details of it hopefully in about a week.

They said it would try to make it based off the price and configuration of my previous M1530. I hope they don't jip me and just give me an 800 dollar model.

Anyways thanks for the help. I'll post up the spec if anyone is interested.
