    Hi,

I currently have an Inspiron 1720. Since I begin to do a lot of photo edition (photoshop, lightroom and some other applications) my laptop begins to be to slow for that kind of work.

I really like my large 17" with resolution 1920x1200. This make photo edition more easy.

Now, laptop screens are wider than old screens, with HD format.

Is the 15.6" screen comparable to my 17" screen?

I really hesitate between two XPS. I prefer the 15" but I want to make sure I will be happy with screen format.

    Thanks for your help!

all now FHD 1920x1080. xps 17 screen bigger then 15, close with inspiron 1720. but now xps build quality just same 3 year old inspiron.

if really need quality, just alinware and other brand notebook.

now xps/inspiron model, harddisk very hard to get-out compare 3 year ago inpiron model.

you also can ref on this forum many problems come on dell xps too.

The XPS 17 is a nice laptop, and I'm sure the 15 is as well, I just haven't seen one personally. The 17 might be a bit bit for taking to class, but weight wise it isn't that bad. No worse than the old Inspiron 1150 I took to class for 5 years, and that was only a 14"...But a 15" would probably be preferable for a lot of transporting.

The XPS 15 has the best FHD screen, commonly felt to be the top 15" FHD screen aside from IPS screens. Might be the best if you do a lot of photo editing. Both systems offer a 1920x1080 FHD option. The 17" one is a matte screen, not a bad one but not amazing. The 15's is glossy, and as I said, reputed to be a great quality screen, but it will have glare issues.

Alinad: Build quality is solid, and the Hard Drive is REALLY easy to get to on the 17" (actually 2 HDD in 17). Takes some disassembly on the 15, yes.

    Thanks for your information.

I think that the XPS 15 should be mine!

Last question...maybe it's stupid, but is there someone you can give me the real dimension of the screen (LxH) of both XPS screens. I just want to compare to my old inspiron.

Well the 15" has a 15.6" diagonal display, so at 16:9 that means 13.6"x7.65".

    The 17" is 17.1" diagonal I believe, so 14.9"x8.4".

Both widthXheight. Now I computed those, so they could be off...but I think they are good. I can check my 17" when I get home tonight.

Confirming the sizes on the XPS 17. 15"x8.5" screen. So my numbers on the 15 ought to be close too.

I will take a chance and see new rebates tomorrow at dell.ca for xps 15

Thanks a lot for those figures. I too am a little uncertain as to which of those two models I'll choose to replace my 11yo Thinkpad A21e (800x600 12" screen). I just made two cardboard cutouts with those sizes and that sure will help me choose. :)

Well, my Dad has the same laptop as you. I also have the XPS 15 and he has seen it as well. My Dad is 62, so a bigger screen ( read not resolution ) is important to him. There is a considerable weight difference as well between mine and his.

Another thing, while I am sure the 1920 screen is nice, it is overkill for the 15", I personally think it is money that can be spent well elsewhere. I have the 1366 screen and it is nowhere near as bad as people make out. I came from an Asus N61, and it is far superior calibration. Ok so the viewing angles are not great, but it is bright enough and I tend to look at the screen head on anyway! Yes the resolution is a little low, and I would prefer 1600X900, but it is not an option. Unless you have loads of screens open, don't waste your money on the 1920. For photoshop work, I just plug in to my Sony HX803 via HDMI. Go for the lowest amount of ram and get 8GB from Crucial.

For me I went with the 15 as it gives me portability as I ride a motorbike and use a topbox. Therefore 17" is neither practical, or needed. If you are going to take it anywhere other than home, I would go for the 15". My Dad loves this machine, and he was blown away by the sound, even my Mother who is no gadget freak at all was impressed!
