On my one year old Dell XPS M1530, with Blu-Ray CD drive, the CD drive stopped working. It used to work but I haven't used it in a few months. I've tried 3 different data CD's (not a Blu-Ray movie DVD), & they all had the same error. In My Computer, when I double click on the CD drive, I get another window that says to insert a disk & it ejects the disk that is in the drive.

Dell had me try a boot from the CD but it wouldn't do it so Dell says I need to replace my Blu-Ray drive. It's under warranty but that still seems extreme. Plus, it's time consuming & I'd really like to be able to use the drive today.

Does anyone know of anything I can try to get it to work? Also, for it to break after 1 year seems pretty bad. Are these drives flaky?

Blu-Ray blue diodes in the PlayStation 3 were problematic on the earlier PS3 models. I don't know what generation Blu-Ray player is in your XPS.

You could try a lens cleaner or carefully with a cotton swap and some rubbing alcohol you could try cleaning the lens yourself. I know that's fixed my plain Jane DVD drive in my Dell laptop in the past.

Since I'm trying to read a data CD, I assume it's not using the blue laser. To clean the lens, how do I get it out of the laptop?

Not necessarily true regarding the lens. If the drive manufacturer is using an all in one lens then yes it could affect reading certain types or all of your discs.

It sounds like you have a slot loader. In that case you may want to try a lens cleaner specifically made for slot loaders. You can either Google it or try Newegg.com

Yes, it's a slot loader. I'll look for cleaners. Thanks.

HA.... I have the same compter. xps M1530 bout a year old and when i upgraded to windows 7 it must have burned up a lens. DVD works when i insert it but no cd or programs of any kind and be read. They said it was the driver so i upgraded to all current and up to date drivers, BIOS, firmare. Still a problem. They said it could be the lens. Then how could it read a DVD.
They said there may be two different lenses in there.
I have yet to go and see if it does have two lenses or if that is even the problem.
If you find a solution let me know as it is extremely frusting and dell is blaming microsoft and micrsoft is blaming dell so ultimatly it is my problem and cant read CD's!!!!
