I can confirm that I have 16Gb of RAM working in my l702x non-3D system which has 2 DIMMS slots.

I'm using Corsair 2x8Gb memory with this part code CMSO16GX3M2A1333C9. Google it and you can find loads of places selling it. I got mine from ginger6 for £105 delivered although I think they may have sold out now.

I put in as soon as it arrived and Windows7 sees 15.9Gb. I haven't used the system properly yet as I am just installing Windows7 on my new SSD but I can't foresee any issues with regards to the RAM upgrade.

Go forth my fellow l702x owners and fill your machines with ram.

    Hope this helps.

*EDIT. Have been using for a few hours and no issues. After Effects is very happy :)

did someone made the same test with a XPS 15 (L502X)?
    I have currently 8 Gb (2x 4Gb modules)
dont need that update right now, but it would be nice to know for future needs ^^

thanks for the link chirstoph23 :)

relating to that site 16Gb to work with the L502X

    its nice to know ^^

however I dont think the 8 Gb ram on my computer is the bottle neck.

probably the gt525m and the i3 is, the i3 can be removed and be replaced to an i7, but not the card, so the next update after the backlit keyboard will be probably another laptop with FHD screen and better specs, but It will not happen in some time ^-^

My first pair of Corsair failed the memtest but the replacement is good. It will definitely work in the L502x.

I believe this may have been the case for a while, it's just Dell have been telling people that it wasn't supported probably because they don't sell 8Gb dimms themselves. As long as your CPU supports it, my feeling is that it will work.

A few others could have bought incompatible ram which backed up this rumour. If you are going to upgrade, stick with the corsair ram as this is known to work,

Theoretically all Sandy Bridge laptops support 8 GB DIMMS, the rest is up to manufacturer if their BIOS allows for 8 GB sticks.

I haven't seen anything besides what is in this thread saying the 8GB's now work. It's always been a 'no go' because Dell bios did not allow it. I'd like to hear more people trying different kinds of RAM.

If you read the comments in Newegg for 8GB modules from Corsair, Patriot, etc., you will see that a few X502x and X702x owners have absolutely no problem with it. I've already confirmed it work in mine. Bios recognized the 16GB. What more proof do you need?

A14. My system was built last week so I'm assuming this is the latest version of A14 off of the Dell site and not the one that screwed everyone over.

I can confirm that I have tried 2x8GB Patriot DDR3 SODIMM on my friend's XPS 17 (Core i7-2860QM) and it worked. I have also tried getting another pair of 8GB and I can confirm that it worked. The only cavaet is that you need to download the latest BIOS to recognise it.

It goes the same to Alienware M17X. All 32GB are recognised.

    Leavenfish:
I think if you have Core i7-2630QM, 2x8GB should work as the cpu is designed to support up to 16GB.

Did anyone try checking Dell support center about this at any point (or realise you could), because in the Detailed System Information section on my non 3d l702 it clearly says 6bg installed and 16gb maximum supported memory.

We are talking about the non-3D version right? Seems like I read the extra RAM would work with the 3D, but not the non-3D.

I've read on a forum somewhere that someone had 32Gb working in their 3D machine although I can not confirm this myself. I think it will be dependent on your processor, click on your processor on the Intel site and it will tell you the maximum ram that can be fitted. 2nd Generation Intel® Core? i7 Processors

As a further note, I now have the A16 bios installed and there are no issues with 2x8Gb dimms.

No, looks like you are on A11, the SMBIOS is something different. I don't know if the A11 bios supports 8Gb dimms so I would recommend installing A16. I've installed on mine with no issues.

Hmm. On my XPS 15 L502X it says:
    Maximum Supported Memory: 8 GB.

But, some poeple in these forums reported that 16 GB works on the L502X.

Hmm, it says 16gb on my l702 and it should be accurate as it reads it from the system. Do you have the latest bios/the same bios as those who it worked for?

Well, it was 8GB when I bought it a few months ago....everyone agreed (except a few clueless Dell reps) that 8 GB was the max for the non-3D version. If that has changed it had to be with a bios upgrade...I just haven't heard which BIOS version it started working with.

Curious is there any point fitting 1600Mhz Ram rather than 1333Mhz...? Im running 17" 1920x1080 - i7 2670, with 6GB currently- 2GB Samsung + 4GB Hyundai and I was looking to upgrade. Laptop is 3 days old...Was just intending to upgrade to 2x4GB sticks but where's the best place to buy 8GB Sticks in UK, not sure I'd need 16GB but hey ho.

Performance gains from faster RAM or RAM with lower timings is negligible with newer Intel CPU's, even in benchmarks.

There is a graph(which I can't find) showing tests performed using games and there was I think about 1 FPS gained from the slowest to the fastest RAM speed and similar tests were done using video encoding software and the likes, so there would be no point in wasting extra money on the faster stuff, just get the cheapest RAM you can from a good brand.

Was that both the 17 and 15 - because on my non 3d l702 not only does it say it in the dell support software, it says it in my setup guide that I finally read while bored last night, so it is supported and this is definately official for this system at least.

    Hello everybody,

First off I have literally been through hundreds of pages and have yet to find an authoritative answer on the 8gb memory stick compatibility with my X17L-781ELS L702x.

    L702x X17L-781ELS
    i7-2630QM (2.0GHz, 6MB Cache)
    GT550M 1GB with Optimus
    8GB RAM 2 DIMM (2x4GB)
    1 TB (2x500GB)
    9 cell battery
    17.3" Widescreen Display (NON-3D)
    Bluetooth
    DVD +/- RW Drive

I'm considering upgrading the RAM to 16GB but I only have 2 DIMM slots currently with (2x4GB). My processor is the i7 2630QM and currently running A17 bios, can anybody confirm using 8GB sticks to get 16GB (2x8GB) with similar specs as mine?

32GB of Corsair Vengenace 1600mhz works, i havent stress tested it, or run memtest, so far i have had no cause to, or any indications of errors.

It does however shift to 1333mhz, and that could be because they have a 1333 Profile saved in JEDEC 1 profile of the RAM, and the BIOS is picking this up as the default speed, or it could eb the controller on the 2860 CPU is shifting from 1600mhz to 1333mhz when you max it out

Dell BIOS-locked the RAM to 1333 on the XPS 17 last year. No clue why, as people with the 15" are often able to run at 1866 even...

ah, thank you, that's mildly annoying, especially as i'm not looking to run it massively quick, just what the ram is rated at (1600mhz) especially as i know running at 1333 the timings could be a lot tighter than they probably are lol

thanks for the info though, now i am wondering if anyone has done a hacked bios that allows more settings

Not that I've seen. The only BIOS mods I've seen are for GPU overclocking/undervolting.

Shifts to 1333mhz?? So, I"m confused, on the XPSl702x, one CAN run 2 8GB sticks...but they CAN ONLY go at 1333mhz, not 1600mhz? And this happened with which BIOS?

Correct, from what others have said/posted, it would appear that Dell have limited the RAM speed via BIOS to 1333mhz, so even if you put RAM in that is rated to 1600, or has an XMP style profile set to 1600 as default, the BIOS will use whatever 1333mhz speeds the RAM reports as compatible with.
And they give you no bios options for altering this either.

Don't know which BIOS, because i am on the latest, and was either on that from new or 1 step below the latest, and it that was how it was for me with the RAM all the time

    Good to know.
I've never 'flashed the BIOS' so would anyone know of steps...or precautions, etc to undertake? I assume I should use the most current.

This one is a little odd, in that there seems no way to flash from bios, or cmd prompt, the BIOS updater is run from windows, so usual restrictions, ensure good battery power level, plug into stable (UPS preferably) mains supply don't have anything running you don't need, personally i'd stay disconnected form the internet and turn off all the protection crap you may have that likes to medal, other than that, follow the instructions on the dell download site page for the bios, and look in the FAQ's there (maybe even here too will be some better guides)
