Been speaking to a REP this morning from dell europe. My main REP JOSEPH GALLAGHER who is excellent was busy so i spoke to a guy called ROB. Also very helpful and clued up. He can confirm this:

They have a XPS M1730 there and its running 2 x 8800M`s IN SLI.
He said its just a test model BUT IT WORKS and runs very smooth. he said they had a problem in testing with the 8800`s originally and adopted the 8700`s but there currently workin on ironing out the problems with the 8800`s.

So there you have it. Its been CONFIRMED.

He couldnt say WHEN THE RELEASE DATE IS but it isnt that far off. When i mentioned about ALIENWARE releasing the m15x and m17x he didnt know about them but he could assure me that the m1730 was ORIGINALLY BUILT with the 8800m`s but they pulled it at the last minute.

Great news. Im now waiting on the final version of the BEAST of the EAST.

    Any Comments welcome.

ALSO there WILL BE AN UPGRADE option on the website. So all current owners will be able to upgrade.

    Comments welcome. :D

Its pretty obvious that eventually 8800 series would be released for M1730, but I have my doubts about what that sales rep told you.

First, if the guy is really up-to-date with all the latest developments, then its strange for him not to know about Alienware announcements (especially since Alienware is a subsidiary of DELL). Furthermore, the 8800 was officially introduced only a few weeks back , whereas M1730 even started shipping two months ago! Therefore I’m not buying the “they pulled it at the last minute” part either. Sure DELL must have designed it to carry the 8800, but I don't think the decision to release it with the 8700 was due to testing problems. Just my thoughts..

To me, it has been obviuos since day 1 that the 1730 would be able to handle the 8800's or whatever high-end card would be out on release.

It's just that nvidia had problems getting the card out in time when Dell was ready to roll out the 1730.

I don't understand why everyone is going nuts trying to figure this out. If it really worried you, you shouldn't have bought the system until it had what you wanted in it - especially for the price Dell is charging....

Lmfao, I thought Dell reps signed an agreement, that they couldn't share internal affairs with public or customers?

    I call shenanigans on this.

But obviously it's gonna happen. Anyone that's read the Dell site or any other gadget site should have seen 'Dell are promising GPU upgrade options down the road'. What in hell were people expecting to come after 8700SLI?

I agree totally with sleey0, if you were worried why did you fork out 2k + for a laptop, or any computer for that matter.

Has anyone taken a look at the owners manual? If you haven't you might want to give it a once over. In particular take a look at the Specs section at the rear. Here's something to ponder concerning the video.

We returned our M1730 - it had the fastest extreme processor, dual 64GB solid state drives and the 8700M SLI configured. It ran much, much slower than our current M1710 with its 7950GTX. I think the drivers were the main culprit with the machine, and it all seemed to have been released way too quickly without waiting for the 8800 parts and stable drivers IMHO. I also found that the SSD's did not give me any more speed that the Hitachi's on the M1710.

I don't really want an M1730 with two half-baked 256MB 8800's in SLI - just give me a single 8800GTX with 768MB on board - that will at least come close to the M1710 which I have yet to have any laptop match.

Does anybody know if Dell lets you get a discount if you return your current 8700's? Or do you have to give full price for new GFX cards and throw the old ones out??

So, now we are saying that the current 8700 GPUs ARE upgradable?? If so, what kind of cost are we looking at, and will the technically competant be able to upgrade themselves - or is it a Dell technician job??.....

Also, is there really a major difference between the 8700 and the 8800 GPUs?

Its a shame dell couldnt sort out sli in the current xps 1730. if i had payed out for one and found out they had the new model working before the previous model ,i would not be happy.
nvidia has released the benchmarks for 8800m gpu's and they are a massive leap in performance.

I had a Dell technician round yesterday to replace the mainboard for my D620. Since I am awaiting delivery of my M1730 I asked him if the graphics card was upgradable. He said it definately was, and that he had changed graphics cards in the M1730 before.

If the leap in performance is really that great, I may just go for the card when the price drops a little.

After some further research its stated that the 8800m GPUs will have more then twice the power of the current 8700m GPUs that come with the M1730.

    Here are some Benchmark tests.

Ive also heard rumours that the 8800m GPU will be available for the M1730 in an SLI configuration, and that if this is true it will bring the notebook up to almost high end desktop standards.

Has the 8800m SLI card been formally announced for the M1730?
If so does anyone have any further information on it?? I'd be very tempted to upgrade........

I'd be happier than a clam to get just a single 8800 gtx in my M1730 and scrap the stupid SLI BS that seems to just have massive driver issues :) But maybe that's just me... *winks*

But a dual 8800m GTX card, with each GPU having 512MB, 1GB total, would be awesome with the right drivers ;)

lol you enthusiasts are funny - you have $4000 laptops and all this power and don't even know the details..

You can easily pull the card out that houses the GPU. It's basically like a desktops graphics card scaled down. 3 screws and it pops out, then you can pop in the exact same card again - WOO, what an upgrade.

You'll get some half ass stripped down 8800GPUS cramped onto a single card.. Then stuck with a $1000 bill.. lol

    No more confirmation needed.
Check the Nvidia site - the dual 8800GTX is available in the M1730.
Ive just rang Dell, they should have a price for the SLI card within the next few days.
