I bought my M1530 back in March and i've loved it ever since, although i've had an engineer come out twice, first to replace a very loud dvd drive (got a quiet one now) and second to replace a dying hard drive.

Back when i got it i used to play games quite often and never ran into a problem, especially not with my CPU.

After i got used to my laptop i decided to undervolt the CPU which worked really well and shaved a few degrees off of my temps. My CPU used to hit 78 degrees max before the undervolt, cant remember what i got after the undervolt tho.

Recently how ever when i try to play games, for example company of heroes my laptop would just shut down for what i could see was no reason, until i did a bit of poking around and it turned out that it was because my CPU was overheating, max temp recorded so far has been 89 degrees. My cpu idles at 65 degrees. I checked the undervolt recently and it turns out it wasnt running, so i've turned it back on and now i get 79 degrees under load.

So in order to play games i HAVE to undervolt my CPU.

Will i have to ring up dell and get another technition to fix what i think is a faulty laptop? I have updated the bios to A09 but this hasnt seemed to change anything.

    hi Tatey.
I have the some how the same system with you.
Did you clean up your laptop regularly (refer to the bottom) and have nothing block on the hole to get some airbflow on the back?
if you didnt'. you should give it a try.
in case you are not sucess, give dell xps support a chat. they are very friendly and helpful. remeber that you paid them to do the job!

Sounds like your fans are clogged with dust

Just had a look and there was no visible dust in the fans, on the phone to dell at the mo, the tech watched me play company of heroes lol. The cpu reached 91 degrees during that time, with the undervolt enabled.

Update: A Dell tech is coming on tues.

    hey Tatey,
do you mind ask the tech support when he's at your home:"does removing the heatsink to reapply the thermal paste void warranty?"

The Dell engineer has just left. He completely stripped my laptop and replaced the motherboard and the heatsink/fan, he installed the new style heatsink/fan which is all copper.

I've just ran orthos and the highest temp i reach now is 75 degrees under full load. My idling temp is now 48 degrees, it used to be 60!

My GPU is running at 59 degrees as well which is a little cooler.

    God bless warranties!

I asked the engineer about replacing the thermal paste he said that he didnt know much about the dell warranty but that it shouldnt be a problem if i were to replace it.
