I'm spec'ing out an XPS M1530, and the T7500 (2.2 Ghz, 4 MB Cache) and the T8300 (2.4 Ghz, 3 MB Cache) are currently the same price. For general usage such as Internet apps, multimedia playback, general productivity apps, will I get more from the extra .2 GHZ or from the extra 1 MB of cache?

I'm thinking the larger cache size will show itself more in actual practice. Anyone?

both is more than enough to handle everyday uses...

but i hear the T8300 is a "penyrn??" or something, and they supposedly last longer than other processors...

get the t8300 its penryn so its got lower voltage usage than the t7500 so the battery will last longer.

    And less heat.
And is faster especially when it comes to SSE4 applications.

Go for T8300 as its a 45nm technology which needs less power=>more battery and less heat.

Are you sure about that? The T7700 has a larger cache than the T8300 and benchmarks have shown the T7700 to be slightly faster than the T8300.

They are about the same speed, but T8300 is better in the long run because of SSE4.1 support.

"About the same speed" with the T7700 being faster for now.

I`m sure SSE4.1 will eventually boost performance in applications. I have doubts we will see enough applications taking avantage of it before it`s time to upgrade to a new laptop though.

To the OP, the T8300 is your better choice over the T7500.

No, its not. They are really about the same speed.
Latest Geekbench average results show T8300 even tad faster than T7700.

That difference doesn't even matter on real life usage.

    What matters is:
    Runs cooler
    Improved battery life
Supports SSE4.1, which is a lot of difference: http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=3195&p=4

Did you actually read topic title? It's T7500 vs T8300 not T7700 vs T8300.

This one shows the T7700 slightly faster than the T8300. It was tested in Macbooks.

    http://www.primatelabs.ca/blog/2008/...february-2008/

And this again shows the T7700 being slightly faster than the T8300

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-...st.2436.0.html

Again SS4 only makes a difference for applications using it. So besides a benchmark application and SETI (they are working on it) what else is there...

Of course battery life and running cooler are important. And I already said to the OP to get the T8300.
