About to make the plunge on ordering an XPS17 or XPS 15 or XPS15z.
Wish there was a 17z, anyone hear anything about this option?

Anyway, really wish I could touch/play with these before making the plunge to purchase - love the apple stores concept.

I'm in Toronto, anyone know of a way to do this?

    Cheers

Costco or WalMart (I forget which) had some Dell models at one point, but not the XPS line.

I've since spoken with a Dell sales rep, she said that I can order any computer and return it within 30 days - and I will get all my money back.

I think I may just order a xps17 and an xps15z and play with them for a couple weeks and make my decision.

Again, would love to know when/if a xps 17z is going to come out, as I think that would suit my wishes/needs the best.

Did the Dell rep also inform you about a 15% re-stocking fee as per Dell's 'terms and conditions' stated on their website?

Also, you will have to wait up 21 days for a refund.

Strange it takes that long for a refund, especially when Dell can charge your credit card within 24 hours!

I would double check if I was you and get it in writing (email) from Dell - maybe via their Dell Chat.

    Good Luck...

you might want to try a Future Shop or Best Buy. they might have a xps15 on display, maybe even the 17. it's hard to say given how slow FS and BB are to update their stock to the "new" units. when i bought my sxps1645, they still had the 1640 for sale going for $2000 + taxes (Intel P-series C2D and ATi 3670!)

FutureShop.ca does not show any Dell XPS models. Plus, I was in one of their large stores the other day, and they had no Dell XPS.

I'm on the phone with the rep again now - will ask about restocking fee.
Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I'll get her to add it in writing to the quote that there is no restocking fee.

not too worried about a delay in refund - at least its not like the City of Toronto, returning deposits 4-6 months later.

Future Shop doesn't have any on their web - they have Alienware with previous generation processors! I'm sure BB is the same.

    cheers gents!

I'm also trying to get some feedback on why US price for exact same system is several hundred dollars cheaper.

    oh, just an FYI.

option for Bluray writer is not available on the Canadian website for xps17, but is available when dealing with a sales rep. Its $19 more expensive than the bluray reader drive (does not include Roxio creator)

when I spoke with the agent last time, she said they cannot match prices from one country to another - as they are essentially different businesses.

apparently the manager had a death in the family this week - won't be back till tomorrow. I'm going to press them on this hard. I can understand a small % difference in price(distribution & quantity efficiencies), but when we're talking $1500 CDN versus $1200 US, that's a 25% increase in price. If I can't get the price adjusted/matched, then at least upgrade my warranty as compensation. Plus, our dollar is higher than theirs right now!

As a comparison, macbook pro's are all $50 more expensive on the CDN website than the US. That's understandable.

The price difference is not primarily due to costs. Prices are set according to the dynamics of each market, essentially Dell sets the price it believes will work in each market. As with so many other products, Canadian consumers are usually willing to pay a higher price than U.S. consumers.

Check the prices for XPS laptops in other markets; some of them will make you glad of Canadian prices.

But please, let us know their final response. Many of us are in the same situation as you. :)

I hear that (see: cell phone plan pricing).

bloody passive Canadians! It's been said before, but we are too eager to please, not wanting to offend.

Negotiating price is something inherent in so many places in the world, wish we were more aggressive with this.

I'm not willing to pay extra for the same thing I could get elsewhere - I am glad/proud to be living in Canada, but we are so tied to the US that I would have assumed Dell's pricing to be the same for both countries.
