I currently have the T7700 @2.4GHz, I was wondering if I could through in a X9000 or something around 2.8GHz, also will the performance increase be marginal, or definitely worth the money.

I am trying to get the best FPS possible in Age of Conan, which is running that great right now.

    Thanks!

Yes, you can upgrade CPU in M1730, just don't forget to get latest BIOS update before that, as it adds compability with penryn CPUs. As for performance boost, I don't think you will see any increase in any games. Video decoding and other CPU intensive software will benefit, but for games GPUs will be the bottleneck.

I am currently running the 8700mGT in SLi, would the money be better spent in upgrading to dual 8800M GTX in SLi?

If so where could I purchase the video cards?

Yes, a GPU upgrade will give a huge performance boost in games, you should fenately go for that instead of CPU upgrade. Dell should introduce a GPU upgrade programm some time this year. If you will buy any from Ebay, make sure that they are specifically for M1730, as they differ from those for Clevo/Sager laptops.

So is the difference between my dual 8700MGT's in SLi and the 8800MGTX's in SLi going to be a hugh difference?

I am trying to get 30+FPS in Age of Conan but it isn't happening, was thinking I might be CPU limited, since I thought my GPUs were more than enough to handle the game.

It's a GPU limitation. With SLI 8800M GTX the game should run on all max settings with 30+ fps (that is untill DX10 version will be released).

I see, Thanks for the advice. I am having a hard time finding a pair of 8800M GTX's for my 1730. Does anyone know where I could purchase them?

They are very rare to find. I know only a few peolpe who could get them through their connections and for a huge sum of money. The only choice is really just to wait for Dell's upgrade programm.

You should check out M1730 thread on this site http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=173512&page=883
There is a lot of info about upgrade program, and a lot of other usefull stuff, if you can handle reading 883 pages :)

Wow, 883 pages. Cliff notes anyone? :)

I guess I will wait for the upgrade program then.

On a side note, my friend has a M1710 with the 7950GTX, would he be able to upgrade to a single 8800mGTX, or will his motherboard not support it?

    Thanks!

No, he won't be able to. His motherboard won't support it.
Unfortunately there is no shorter version of that thread.

Wow, looks like I will just have to skim through it ;)

Yeah, took me like a week to go through first 300, when I first came across that thread :) I'm a slow reader tho :)

7950 is the best GPU you can get for 1710, so no more room for improvement there.

As for 8800, you can try to PM to Ifti, he is a forum member here. He was talking about selling his M1730, so he might be able to sell you his card. But don't expect a cheap price tho.

The Dell 6300 uses the same chassis as the 1710 but has a motherboard that will support a 8800. But you will also have to upgrade the CPU to a socket P?

So basically a new MB, CPU, and I can fit a 8800mGTX in a 1710?

That sounds like it would be the ultimate, smaller than the 1730 and more powerfull possibly?

Looks like it would be expensive though :)
