I Have a XPS M1530 with windows 7 and vista installed on the hard drive. My sound has stoped working and then it restarts randomly when playing a dvd or a video file on the system. So i Phoned up Dell, and i tell them that i think the problem may be an hardware problem. As it happens on both of the operation systems, but plays fine through the headphone socket. Only then to get told that Dell doesn't support duel boot ups, and doing so can damage the hardware in the laptop which may be the cause of my issue. Dell are sending out an Technician with new motherboard on monday so its not like they are refusing to fix the problem. But it did cause a long debate were i voiced my disbelieve that the duel boot would be the cause of any hardware problems. Are Dell making up facts, or is there something to this.

Dell is making up facts. Dual booting is purely software level. It does not adversely affect any hardware.

Prior to Nvidia killing video card with a software update, I would have said that there is no way it can cause a hardware issue.

I will however say that 97% of the time, a software change will not cause a hardware issue. I'm sure that there are rare issues where this will happen, but in your situation I would say 99.99% that Dell is incorrect. The only things that will normally cause a hardware issue are firmware flashing, voltage changes, fan speed control changes, and turning off temperature safetys. Software wise at least.

Just don't say that it's impossible. Cause then Nvidia will prove you wrong.

There is no way a dual boot can screw up your motherboard. They're basically trying to blame you for their hardware faults.
