I'm thinking about getting the low end processor for now and upgrading later. Would that be possible?

Yes. And that is usually a smart path to consider when purchasing a new system.

I'm considering doing the same thing as I plan on ordering a SXPS16 soon and my CPU of choice is the P9600 (2.66gHz, 6MB, 25w) which is not offered by Dell. All of the P & T series are socket P so they should be interchangeable. I would not expect BIOS issues since other P & T processors are currently used in the SXPS16.

I would think replacing the CPU would just require removing the bottom held on by ten screws, removing the heatpipe assembly, then replacing the CPU and reapplying thermal material (I'd use Arctic Silver 5). Then put everything back together.

Did the same with my old xps1530. Started out with a t5750 (I think) & bosched in a t9500 (I think) es I got of ebay quite cheap. All worked well. Intend to do the same to my xps 1640 once the warranty runs out. Is very easy & cost effective.
