So I just acquired a 1647.. obsidian black and I also have a Arctic white 1340, and my 13 was black once so I know what it looks like and was wondering if the plastic part can be painted to a metallic navy blue.. and how?

No offence, but if you have to ask then I wouldn't bother as you might just **** it up.

I'd recommend a laptop skin rather than painting it..

They're expensive though. A customized skin from Zagg made for the Studio XPS 16 runs for ~$60.

I can give you a 50% coupon if you want.. I have tons.

I have a clear invisible shield skin on mine, just to protect from scratches and such. They have a limited lifetime warranty I believe, so if yours gets scratched you can return it for another. I'm going to have to do this because Dell is sending me a replacement laptop and although I could peel this skin off and use it again, I'd rather have a brand new one.

Good, thought I had probably hit a nerve then :D
Yeah, I'm sure places will do it. Don't know if there's any laptop specific places though. Maybe a car body shop? Model shop? I don't know?

There's someone on here that painted his own and it looked pretty good...

I'll go and dig the thread out.

I haven't painted anything for awhile, so my XPS post, (wow, is that still being looked at?) should explain how I did it in pretty good detail. I do know you need special paint for plastic, so run down you your local Model/hobby shop and they will have all kinds of can paint that is just for plastic. They should have that shade of dark metallic blue you want.

You can contact Colorware PC and see if they will do it. They have the M15x and Studio 15 listed on their site but they might be able to do yours as well. It's worth a shot.

Heh. I don't know anyone willing to spend $500 to get their laptop a custom paint job. Hell, that's more than a car.

That is about right for a good laptop paint job.
That is not correct for a car paint job unless you do a cheaply crummy Maaco paint job. Good Car paint job start at $2,000 and go waaay up depending on what you want done. I know because I've been there, done that... and had many hot rods, Corvette's painted over the years.

    Well Hi Cin!
Don't be mad, but I got a great deal trading for some stuff, another notebook and camera gear for that notebook. Got more than it was worth, the the person "Just had to have that notebook... loved the paint job".
I've owned 4 notebooks since, couple Dells, just last week got the new Samsung R530. Yep, I loved the paint job on that notebook, best I've seen from any notebook maker so far. Plus, I'm a big fan of Samsungs LCD TV & monitors which I have both of and this one matches the "touch of red" they have. I won't have to paint this one. ;)

Oh yeah, I use the notebook and camera gear to do this:

UK is a totally different story than across the pond over here and prepping is what you pay the most for as it makes or breaks the paint job. ;)
