Hey guys, when i ordered my xps i was told i can extend my warranty to 3-5 years whenever i want. so i ordered only 2 years in the beginning.

a week later i was thinking i could upgrade to 3 or 4 years

dell then told me no you can extend the complete care only the dell warranty.

basically i could have just send back the laptop (2 weeks return policy in germany) and ordered again with an extended warranty.

But I didnt wanna wait for tha long again to get a new one. So I let dell turn me down.

Now I do think I wanna extend it, is there really no way?

P.S. Since they put an ES 920xm (which is illegal to sell) maybe i can kinda force them to upgrade it for me :)

Lol, I think you should report that to them before it's too late. After a while they'll just assume you bought it on your own and replaced the 840qm you had.

The technician probably swapped the CPUs so he could make a quick buck.

It makes sense. They don't want you purchasing complete care AFTER you drop it off the counter. They have no real way to tell that your laptop isn't already broken, unless they send a tech out to verify.

i only have my laptop for 6 months... and i still have 2 years complete care. so that does not make any difference.. know what i mean? that one or 2 add. years woudl be added to my existing 2 year warranty.

Oh, you already have the completecare. I thought you were trying to add completecare to the regular warranty. I don't see why there would be a problem extending it if you already have it.

Yeah, they told me so, but now i have something against dell, illiegally giving me an ES CPU, ill force them :)

Is it the same insurance company world wide or could that be the reasoning for them not wanting to extend it?

I have London General Insurance here...

    1) For what extending complete care would cost, you could probably buy a second laptop, used, and have it as a hot-spare.

    2) Giving you an ES CPU isn't necessarily illegal. That's a private matter between Dell and Intel.

cmon :) i doubt its that much

I have read in multiple forums, german forums, that on ES CPUs intel does not provide any warranty, and it is def not what i bought, and def worth less than what i bought.

That guy in teh german forum emailed Intel and got a reply saying that selling or distributing ES CPUs is not allowed, that wanst that long ago...

Apart from that its worth less and I deserve my 820qm back.

You can usually extend CC, if you don't want to do it now, they will usually contact you w/in 6 months of the expiration of your warranty to try and upsell a extended warranty package to you also. : )

Yeah, you can buy mostly-complete Dell Latitude D630's/D830's for $350-$400 or so, and they're roughly 3 years old. So I would expect, come 2-3 years from now, you could do the same with your particular model of XPS.

I'd rather have a second laptop in my hands, than the promise of a replacement laptop if mine breaks. So that'd be my rationale for keeping the $275 in my pocket.

Good luck picking up a used (but fully functional) 1645 for $275, even in a few years.

    Dell XPS M1530 on eBay.ca (item 300489578987 end time 08-Nov-10 00:19:32 EST)

    Dell m1530, no bids @ $300.

Don't see why you'd expect a slower rate of depreciation on an XPS 1645.

(In all fairness, Completecare does cover you if you're travelling and your laptop breaks and needs replacement while you're on, say, an overseas vacation....but what's really the value of that, and how often do you actually travel??)
