Wow this is really getting on my nerves...

    I have a dell xps 1530 w/xp + GeForce 8400M GS video card.

I am using the VGA output to my samsung monitor. Initially I had everything working fine, I could close my laptop lid and the computer screen would work on the Samsung.

However I changed the refresh rate from 60 to 70 bc I wasn't sure if it would work on the Samsung and if it didn't I figured NVidia would ask me to approve the settings or revert.

Well Nvidia didn't ask, so now, whenever I close the lid on my laptop it outputs an unsupported mode to my Samsung. So I can't see, but if I open the laptop it will work fine and I can adjust the refresh rate, but as soon as I close it, it reverts back to that stupid 70 refresh rate.

How the heck do I get it back to 60?

PS - I have already tried system restore, didn't work.

Have the external monitor plugged in.
    (hopefully this works)
Go into 'Display Settings', click (the icon of) Monitor 2.
Click 'Extend the desktop onto this monitor', click 'This is my main monitor'/
Click Monitor 1, uncheck 'Extend extend the desktop onto this monitor'.
Double click Monitor 2, click the 'Monitor' tab and change the Screen refresh rate to 60 Hertz.

Namaiki thanks for the help, unfortunately it did not work.

I think that is because it is directly involved with the nvidia control panel itself (right click on desktop background and choose nvidia)

It's so annoying because I have run the display set up several times through that and I have the samsung set at 60, but when I close the laptop the monitor says mode not supported and when I open the laptop if I leave the nvidia panel up there is a split second flash on the PC screen which shows the monitor setting still at 70

Sorry I can't help you, because I've got Intel graphics from 2003. ><

Thats alright, thanks for trying. I may have to contact nvidia themselves.
