    Can't get fingerprint reader to work

    First off, I know the fingerprint reader is not very secure. But since I have a new XPS 1530 with a built in reader, I want to make sure I can use it because 1) it's under warranty & 2) it's cool.

    I've read the readers can be quite flaky so if I decided to actually use it to log onto my computer, I want to make sure I will also always have the option to enter a password instead. Is that true?

    I know (if I can get it to work), to set it up, I enter a user name & login password to attach that fingerprint to that user. What if I change the password for that user? Does the fingerprint still work, or do I have to re-enter a fingerprint?

    I've been using the Tutorial to practice. I'll swipe 20 times, but it doesn't read it. Once in awhile it reads it, but it always says, "bad". I've tried different fingers & different speeds. Since it's sort of depressed in the case, I press down a bit. What are the tricks to get it to work? At what point do I say it's broken & call Dell?

    you need to smear your finger not swipe it. that should do the trick.

    Also, they tell you to not lift the tip of your finger at the end of the wipe (or smear), but I found it worked better if you do because it reads more of your fingertip.

    I honestly just gave up on mine since it would usually take 3-4 swipes each time I wanted to enter a password, and it just wasn't worth the effort.

    ...but at least it's one less process I have to have running. :)

    I found you have to go slowly rather than a fast swipe. Do it slow and press down good and it works every time for me :)
