    This is a strange one......

When I shutdown, I select Shutdown from the Windows 7 Start menu. However, the L702X acts like I selected Restart instead, it always restarts after it shuts down. I tried clicking Shutdown in the red control at the lower right of the Windows logon screen, same thing it always restarts. The only way I can really shut down is to hold the power button down for several seconds.

I just noticed this after a tech replaced the display glass a couple days ago, however, the PC acts normally in all other respects.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

Just in case (you may have already checked this)...

Right-click on your start button and select properties, then set the power button action to shut down if it's somehow been set to restart.

I had this happen once to me on my original XPS 17 that I returned for a better spec one. I got it off by unplugging, and once it powered down I yanked the battery. It behaved afterwards for the whole day I had it following this. Check what dennilfloss says, but that's likely not the trouble, it wasn't for me. If it persists, call up Dell...

Not sure what exactly cured it, at least for the time being.

First, I normally don't leave the battery in, just run off AC. However, I never actually unplugged the power while I was trying multiple shutdowns that turned into restarts yeterday.

I finaly unplugged it and went away for a while. When I came back, I plugged it in, read the replies to this post, then went into advanced system properties, Startup and recovery, and unchecked "Automatically restart." Normally you'd uncheck this if your system was automatically restarting after a bluescreen shutdown, and you want the blue screen to remain in order to read the error codes. I had previously checked the system event log an there were no issues, I would expect at least a "system shutdown unexpectedly" event to be logged at the next start up if it was actually blue screening and restarting, but there was nothing. Anyway, after unchecking the box, I tried a shutdown, and it shutdown properly.

Then I went back in and re-checked the box, tried it again, and again it shut down properly. Not sure if it was the toggling of the box state, the fact that it was unplugged, or some other factor that cured it.

Also, I checked the Start button properties as dennilfloss sugggested. Power button action was already set to "shut down." I checked the Control Panel Power applet, and Power button action was set to "Sleep" and in fact it was sleeping when I pressed the power button.

So it appears that the Power applet's setting for the Start button action overrides the Start button's propert for the Start button action.

Glad you got it fixed. :) The feedback info you provide is definitely worth remembering. I just checked my desktop (I don't have a Windows 7 laptop yet) and this 'Automatically restart' was ticked in Start Up & Recovery for me also but I just tried shutting down and this setting doesn't seem to be interfering as the shutdown proceeded normally.
