Sorry for this newb question, does thermal paste help cool the computer better than before after you replaced Dell's thermal paste? Also does the computer get really hot from being idle or watching a movie?

This is pretty good.I will repaste soon as i get my laptop. But does this broke the warranty. You take apart whole laptop ???
I read taht sanding + repaste have verry good re with xbox 360 heatsync and stop overheating. And as you know Xbox have very big overheating problems. And if helps there i think it will help here. But on the other hand the heatsink on the box doesn't seem to have so big moon craters as you say, just little scraches ,and with sanding you take very little of the surface.I think to try this method on my Xbox and see what will be the result. And if it ispositiv i will do it on my laptop. But probably first i must see is the heatsink are that poorly made.

So which thermal paste do you recommend? I read that the AS5 really doesnt work well on this laptop. Is G751 Shin-Etsu that much better? I used AS5 originally on my XPS 16, worked great!

    Hi,

Ok I am very new to the forum, so please tell me if I'm doing something worngg.

I was wondering if these temperatures for my 3 month old Dell XPS 15 are normal or too high and whether I should be worried or not.

I would firstly like to mention I have this setup:

    - Intel Core i7 740QM
    - 2GB Nvidia GT435m
    - 640GB HDD
    - 720p display

I have been pretty worried about the temperatures I have, especially with the GPU and CPU after playing games. I record my temps with GPU-Z and Core Temp.

I would like to add that I have 'invested' money in a cooling pad. I bought the Targus Chillmat, and the decrease in 2 - 5 Celcius is minimal but I suppose everything counts.

    Here are my temps:

Idle - not doing anything...leaving it alone for a while
    CPU: Max - 51C Min - 41C Ave - 47C
    GPU: Max - 53C Min - 46C Ave - 48C

Internet Browsing, youtube (like now) etc.
    CPU: Max - 65C Min - 53C Ave - 56C
    GPU: Max - 63C Min - 55C Ave -57C

Playing games (such as Just Cause 2, COD 4 and MW2)
    CPU: Max - 83C Min - 68C Ave - 79C
    GPU: Max - 96C Min - 75C Ave - 89C

    Note:
    - These temps are when my radiators were on and after a couple hours of playing. If I play games for about less 1 hour, temperatures of the GPU never exceed 90C and the CPU never goes above 80C.
    - Generally when I keep my windows open, radiators off, the temperatures are about 5 - 10 C lower.
    - The CPU temp is the highest temp recorded accross all four cores

Now, would you say that my temperatures are too high? I occasionally get into the 90's while gaming, but most of the time hang around in the 80's.

In the long term, will these temperatures shorten the life of my computer? This involves me playing about 10 hours of games a week...about 1 hour on week days and 2 hours on weekends at the most.

Would you suggest I repaste the GPU and CPU after my warranty expires?

The T.J.Max for the CPU is apparently 100C according to CoreTemp. Does anyone know the T.J.MAX for the GPU? Apparently they can withstand 110C? Is that correct?
Also, is the T.J.MAX the temperature where it will switch off? Or where damage starts to happen?

I would really appreciate some answers if possilbe, sorry for the bombardement of questions.

    Thanks

    XMaggotHeadX

P.S. I have contacted DELL before. The first time, I was told the temps were too high, and the second time I was told they were well within range, so I have no idea what to think :/

my temps after 2 hours of Portal 2 @1080p:

    CPU temps: 84-86 °c
    GPU temp: 74°c

Do you guys think that it's worth it to replace the stock thermal compound?

If you do the repaste properly,it will be a pretty good drop in temp and all around make the cpu,gpu last longer.A laptop cooler is a good buy also.My temps dropped on average 10 to 15 degrees with a lap & repaste, cooler combo. Also using an ssd improves not just amazing speed boost but drops the overall temp a bit also.Just my experience, but I loved the outcome and repaste all my stuff,I.e pcs,xbox,ps3 etc.Remember too much is as bad as too little when it comes too thermal paste.Good thread.

    HI,
I have my XPS L502x for 10 months. It has a Core i5-2410M and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M 2GB Graphics Chip.

Recently, after I play WOW for about one hour and an half, there will be tiny but noticeable graphic hangups which bother me a lot. I just repasted my CPU and GPU with Arctic Silver Ceramique and I started to use a CoolerMaster pad for my laptop, but I still encounter graphic hangups after I play WOW for a while. The CPU temperature climbs to over 75 and GPU around 67 when WOW is on. Is the temperature normal? Anything wrong with my choice of thermal paste or the amount of paste I put? Anyone could help me out? Thanks.

I want to clean my laptop's fan and also replace thermal paste. However all the videos I saw show entire disassembly. I don't know why, but I can't seem to find any tutorials/guides which does not follow entire disassembly.

Cos in 2011, I had my laptop serviced under warranty. When technician had come to my home, he did not remove palm rest at all and did not remove the screen also. I don't remember exact procedure though.

appreciate any help. Thank you :)
