    Hi,

Standard power adapter for the Dell XPS 9550 is 130W. I am not aware of any USB-C charger with that high power.

Is anyone using the USB-C port to charge their laptop? Is yes, which adapter are you using?

    Thanks!

Will it work? Maybe, maybe not.

The dream is that USB Type-C charging becomes universal, where any charger can charge any device. In reality, that doesn't quite work today. Each laptop and laptop charger has its own requirements / limitations on power draw and power output. So the only guaranteed working charger for a laptop is the one provided by the laptop manufacturer.

There is some limited success in using chargers on different brands of laptops. But that is really on a case-by-case basis, without any blanket universal rule. The only resource I found on this that did actual testing is this article below.

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/3017...-every-device-we-have-to-chase-the-dream.html

It doesn't list your laptop model specifically. But the takeaway from that article is:

1). Some USB type C chargers will work with other laptop models, some will not.

2). Voltage and current do not need to be equal for it to work on another laptop model. Some lower-wattage chargers will charge the battery slower, only charge when laptop power is off, etc.

I use the Google 60w pixel type C charger. If I boot up with it plugged in I get a warning that it wont charge. Now it does charge but ocassionally when it switches to the nvidia gfx card (gaming) it stops charging.

Thank you for your responses. So it is confirmed that the google 60W charger works. Anything else that someone has manged to get to work, including any power banks (with USB-C)?

Have you tried charging it with chromebook charger when it is not in use - how long does it take to charge from say 20/30% to 100%?

It appears to charge it just the same as the charger that came with my 9550. I'll drain my battery tonight and get some numbers. Again, you can charge it while using the type-c charger it only seems to stop charging if I'm playing gfx intensive games.

UPDATE: Here's a link to the album. My screen brightness was at 100%, 4k.

I noticed that when plugged in with the 60W pixel adapter my processor is really slow. Only going up to 0.8 Ghz and slowing down PC usage enormously.
    I'm on latest bios: 1.2.14.
Even when choosing High Performance power plan. Anybody else seeing this?

Hey I might be missing something but it seems that your battery is discharging over time (clock time and charge status). Could you confirm?

Also @yannicks have you seen processor throttling issue persist?

Sorry chaps, trying to find something lighter/smaller to carry than my standard 9550 charger, thanks in advance!

The CPU on my Precision 5510 will work at full speed using the standard Dell 65W provided I don't use the dGPU. Battery charging will vary depending on the CPU and other power drain in order to keep the total power from the PSU within the rated amount. he CPU will, however, throttle (but not as low as 800MHz) if I run the 5510 off the 45W Dell Latitude XT PSU. Note that you will need an adaptor to use the standard PSU (which I prefer if it's one with the L-shaped plug which routes the power cable to the back).

If the computer can't detect the PSU power capacity (which is done through the centre pin on the standard PSU connector) then it will assume the worst and throttle itself.

Thanks for your thoughts gents. As much as I would like a small multipurpose charger, I think I will not risk it, I will just have to bite the bullet and carry the heavy load. :)

I've been using this with my i5 XPS 15 9550 for months and it has worked very well. Granted it gets very warm under full load (battery charging plus using the laptop at the same time), but it seems well built and I've not had issues of any sort with it.

I'm surprised people are having issues with the USB C charging. I haven't had one problem yet, in fact I only take my 130w when I know I'm going to game (of course you can't game with a 60w adapter).

Hi Yannicks, I use a Ivoler 60W USB-C charger. It charges the laptop fine but I also have the stutter issue, even when the laptop is fully charged. Were you able to fix that issue?

    I use this charger:

I would stop using this charger immediately. I had the same unit in white. It worked for a week, then gave out a bright flash, pop sound followed by a burning smell. My XPS 15 9550 and Sony Z5 Premium were connected to it that that time, good thing they were not damaged when it happened. There are several other reports of this happening in the Amazon reviews too, check them out.

    Good luck!
