    Hey
I have an XPS M1530 (just got it late august 08)

I recently, for the 1st time, tried to run chkdsk and had it scheduled for teh next time i restarted my computer. however, when i restarted, nothing happened. it went straight to the windows vista logon screen like normal.

i tried a lot of things. chkdsk through GUI (tools tab in properties of disk C :) and through command prompt.

anyone else have this problem, and if u solved it, how so?

i want to run chkdsk....and this is quite frustrating seeing as how my laptop is pretty new and it wont run something as simple as this.

the annoying thing about Vista is that you have to run system programs as administrator if you want to them to work correctly at a low level.

so if you want to run CHKDSK in Vista:
    - go to Start > Programs > Accessories
    - right-click on "Command Prompt" and choose "Run As Administrator"
    - now you can run CHKDSK and it will work after restart.

you can just get a bootable Windows XP or Vista CD.... go into Recovery console
    - then type: CHKDSK C: /R

After I do that, do you think I will be able to run it without the CD? I'm at college right now, but when I go home for break I will do it. Will the chkdsk from the CD fix the chkdsk on the hard drive? Otherwise, whats the point of having it on the hard disk?!?

I have the exact same problem (I even got my XPS 1530 late August 08 as well)

Nothing seems to have worked so far. I can run chkdsk with the operating system disc that came with it. However, it seems that chkdsk is still scheduled and it's not allowing me to defrag. I tried removing that in the registry but it still won't work...

you don't need to Boot off a cd or dvd to fix disc errors using chkdsk ...

just open command prompt with administrator credentials and then type this

    Code:
    chkdsk /f /r
then do let Windows take care after you reboot it

That's sort of the point. chkdsk /f doesn't work, even with administrative credentials. It doesn't start at boot. It just boots straight into Windows.

This is not allowing me to defragment because the drive is marked dirty (I have no idea how to mark it clean)
