Decided to take advantage of the black friday 10% off....
Tried searching (briefly), found sort of an answer, but wanted to verify/clarify.

Can the RAM be upgraded? I found 1 thread referencing it, but also that the current processor wouldn't be able to handle it. If I were to purchase, it'd be the core i5-7200U (current $999 model).

I decided on the XPS 13 narrowly over the thinkpad X1 Carbon based on design...but the thinkpad can be configured with 16gb of RAM for $100 than the XPS13 with BF sales. If I can upgrade the XPS13, great! if not, I'll be back to a lack of decision.

why 16gb? I don't know, really. Future proofing? I've had my current laptop (lattitude 4300) for ~7 years, which NBR also helped me pick out. Still runs great, just want more power

That's a negative, Ghost Rider. The pattern is full.

If you buy the XPS 13, just do yourself a favor and get it with 16GB of RAM. That is more than enough RAM than you'll ever need today, or for the entire lifetime that you own the laptop. RAM upgrades are cheap anyway.

That would be a great plan...the downside is cost.
    x1 with 16gb RAM = $1000
XPS 13 with 16gb ram = $1530 (from what I can tell), or $1300 at costco

It honestly doesn't matter much between the XPS 13 and Thinkpad Carbon X1.

They are both very portable Ultrabooks with comparable performance and battery life. They are both designed to do basic computing tasks on the go. It's really a toss up between those two; because in all likelihood, you will buy one of those laptops, use it for 2-4 years, and then replace / sell / dispose of that laptop once you want an upgrade, or once the laptop develops a hardware problem that isn't worth fixing.

Between those two laptops, it really won't make much of a difference to your computing experience over the next several years. But since you are posting in the Dell forum, people will be biased towards the XPS 13... Probably because of its super thin screen bezel

I have the late 2015 XPS 13 (9350), and I really like the machine, but honestly, if you want 16GB the Thinkpad looks like a better deal right now. The only thing that the XPS has over the Thinkpad is really the tiny bezel. It's nice, but in most real life situations weight is more important than size, imho. And the lighter Thinkpad offering a 14" screen is a nice bonus, too.

Went with the x1. You're right didsip, I was just after that XPS bezel. It looks so nice! It blinded me from what I really wanted.

    Thanks for the input!
