So I got my LED XPS m1530 today, and let me tell you it looks very nice. I opened it up, and it is noticeably lighter than the original one I have. The lid doesn't appear to be thinner (probably due to the 2.0 megapixel camera requirements) but it is brighter. I'm comparing two m1530's with a native 1440 x 900 resolution. The CCFL is LG and the LED is CMO1555. I do not know the manufacturer but there are no grains or any kind of bleeding at first glance. Comparing these two laptops with my camera was pretty hard. The differences are minimal when comparing it to an LG but it's there. The screen is more vibrant. I apologize for the blurriness. I had to turn flash off.
The one on the left is the CCFL, and the one on the right is LED. Please comment =) There is some glare on the LED but that's just the camera. The lighting is very even throughout and it looks very nice. I recommend the LED.
I'll post better pics tonight with some more details.

Good job on the comparison!
I will be seeing how the LED looks in person tomorrow night!
It is really hard to see a difference with that camera of yours.
The sunset on that wallpaper looks better on the LED -
Once again, I apologize for the bad quality, but I can assure you the LED is very bright. I just noticed that there is some light leakage at the bottom of the screen when it's entirely black. One other thing, the surface of the laptop is a lot coarser than the old one. Does anyone else have this? I can feel more bumps than usual if I slide my finger up and down.
-
CMO1555 : CHI MEI OPTOELECTRONICS. The other dude got the same one but with no bleeding.
You need to do a power comparison while you have that other Dell -
Scratch what I said, there's no light bleeding. I was just being paranoid. The screen's perfect. Now when I try to open the lid, the base of the laptop doesn't come up with it.
-
i don't understand why people want an even brighter LED screen, i have a M1530 with LG 1680x1050 and in most places i use it my eyes hurt @ full brightness. For me it would only be useful when sitting directly in the sun
-
LED backlights in display screens are an improvement over old CCFL (cold-cathode florescent lamps) technology for several reasons, including a stunning picture due to more vibrant contrasts, better power savings, and they’re easier on the environment because they contain no mercury and last longer.
-
led backlighting is the solution for non grainy screen..if you don't want to end up with a grainy screen,u'd better go with a led backlighting!!
-
you know over time the brightness would decrease and you increase the level of brightness manually until its maxed out and have no option but to change the screen,,,
-
Hmm I wonder if I can get and LED screen for my dell d630?
I may call and ask. -
From the pictures, personally I think the CCFL screen looks better.
I have an m1330 with the CCFL and I've never regretted that decision. -
-
The truth is you can't tell the difference because those pictures are all blurry / bad.
-
Pictures are bad, but in person the LED is brighter than the LG by a small margin. It was a pretty good improvement, but here are some tweaks I got from my new system
-Brighter Screen
-Lighter lid (although it appears to have the same width)
-Quieter slot drive. I just noticed this when I tried all the media buttons. They are fully functional and don't require that much force compared to the old one. Even during startup, all you get from the drive is a small humming sound, which is very good. Maybe perhaps they fixed the loud drive issue?
-Surface of the laptop is a lot coarser when I rub my fingers up and down. But it feels a lot sturdier.
-sound appears to be a little better. Again, perhaps they changed the material of the frame so you don't get that hollow sound? (just speculating)
Overall, I like the LED. The cosmetic improvements are minor but welcoming benefits. -
The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
I have heard LED based is better.
-
I am the other guy that was lucky enough to get my LED 1530 today also. I agree 100% about the brighter screen and my slot drive is virtually silent while in use. -
-
Obviously its hard to compare the CCFL and LED screens, becuase the exposure is going to be based on one or the other. Meaning the LED screen looks blown out in the photo because its brighter, and the camera metered for the CCFL.
Makes it very hard to do comparison shots.
My dream is a MATTE LED screen in my Inspiron 1525 - i'd pay good money for that. -
Thanks for the effort Apoc
-
=) Sorry for the pics, I'm a college student and I had midterms today. I know they suck =), but like I said, I'll take better ones when I have the time. I just wanted to post some up. I'll try taking them again. Sorry for all those who wanted a good comparison.
-
I can not tell the LED one is better than CCFL from your pics.
However, thank you anyway.
In my oponion, the LED screen have more vive color in the same light level (The lightest level will be not used by most users, so they need to be asjusted to the simlar light situation), for example, the black is more black. Is it more vive?
And I am also very expecting pics of light bleeding that are in pure black background. If the LED screen has little light bleeding and is not grainy, I think it worthes its value and I will choose it. -
And YES, I'll get better comparison pics as soon as I can. I'm doing this to help others choose what screen they want. Even though it's not an LG, it is very very bright. You will not regret getting it. -
Well shoot you're making me want to give Dell a shot again just to get a look at this screen.. If there are some better coupons going around by the end of the summer I may give it a shot.
-
OK so its perfect with no grain, which is basically what everyone wants as standard. What is the device ID for your screen?
Also good luck with your mid terms -
I waffled for a while whether to get my 1330 with LED or CCFL. I ultimatley decided to splurge on LED and escew getting a geforce card (not a gamer laptop) and I just got it two days ago, it's so clear and crisp it's insane, really pleased.
-
Can a few users in here play nice? I really hate having to delete your posts...
-
those pics suck
I'm waiting for new pics . . . -
CCFLs are quite fragile and shocks can decimate the lifetime of it.
I don't really understand why the industry has gone with CCFLs so long. LED is obviously superior when it comes to power save and they still make CCFL displays for them. Also that they contain mercury should have been a motivation enough to start with LEDs sooner. Most countries has large restrictions when it comes to mercury and in my personal opinion is that mercury should be banned in all consumer products as far as it goes.
LEDs are such an obvious choice for mobile devices so can someone tell me why this adoption is going so slow. -
Fox:
My guess would be that the industry wants to keep costs down and price tags low. Profit trumps the environment most of the time and the average consumer has no idea what the difference between a LED LCD and a LCD is. -
Just got mine a little while ago and still setting it up. Started it up off the battery b/c I don't have an outlet for the power supply, why does dell ship these with the three prong adaptor anyway? Sorry, I know nothing about electrical outlets so I'm not sure what the proper names are.
Anyway, I got the extension cord, plugged it in and the screen lit up like a Christmas tree:smile: It absolutely blows away the samsung on my vostro 1500....I'll get some pics up tonight.
I'm very happy with my choice, we'll just to have to see about Vista though b/c it seems very boggy at the moment and clearly needs to be cleaned up. -
IM_ALL_IN: Is yours the LED or CCFL? Looking forward to your pictures!
-
-
Ok I snapped a few guys. Both monitors(samsung and CMO LED) are 1440x900and at 100% brightness. Keep in mind I'm no professional photographer
and it's very hard to capture the LED screen b/c the brightness washes everything out, but a few of these came out good IMO. The monitor is no doubt the best I've ever seen...this thing absolutely blows away the samsung and everything else I've ever came across. Obviously it's almost impossible to do it justice with the camera but I hope you can at least get a glimpse of the quality.
-
I started to ask myself why i did not buy my laptop with the LED screen
-
IM_ALL_IN those snapshots actually make the LED look worse than the other because everything is so blown out.. but I'm quite sure it's just your camera is exposing to the darker screen.
However it's also making the screen look like it has a strong yellow tint compared to the other one.. does it really? Because I'm concerned about the colors.. they don't look so good to me. At least from those shots, the Samsung CCFL appears to have vastly superior color rendering/accuracy. -
There is no yellow tint. The camera really has a hard time with the bright colors on the LED so it's very hard to capture an accurate picture. -
I'm going to guess the camera wouldn't have a hard time if you took a photo ONLY of the LED screen, then it would not appear too bright
-
That's how the first two were done
-
Hi, AM_ALL_IN,
can you give a snapshot where both screens are at black background (e.g. turn them to black screen saver)?
I am looking forward to knowing the situation of light leakage of LED. -
Got my LED 1530 in front of me right now!
The screen is amazing. No problems at all. -
Chi Mei Opt` LED Screen
Part number #Fx313 -
Yes, I believe the LED is good and amazing.
And expect your pics~~ -
I have nothing to compare it to so it will not look as striking.
The laptop is A+++ no problems at all! I am glad I returned it for a LED screen. -
nice Phallus, glad you like yours
mine doesn't come for another week... got delayed again until the 1st of May
-
how much longer do i have to wait till the LED is availble in the UK? >..<
-
"blown out" is a photography term which means all the highlights are over exposed. It's a term you use when you have.. well what that has. A bunch of solid white space because all the detail has been.. blown out.
Thanks for clarifying the colors though. I'm trying to wait for some better coupons and I think I will pick one up just to check it out in person. Who knows.. might keep it if all goes well for a few weeks running. I'm still also considering the Fujitsu A6120 but it's like $1300 for the config I want and I think I can get the Dell cheaper. Sony SZ was on the list.. but it's like $1700 for the one I want LMFAO -
Can someone tell me if led 1440x900 screen would suit for my lid - now I have samsung (1680x1050) and i'm about changing it myself to sth better. Could it be led screen?
-
I really can't say enough good things about this screen though, CCFL's are dead to me now. Keep in mind that I've never seen the infamous LG, but I've seen a ton of other monitors in my time and they got nothing on this. We need some heart icons here b/c I might be in love with this screen -
I'm glad you're so happy with it cause I took the risk and ordered a new M1530 with the LED in 1440 just the other day, my first real laptop to boot too!
Will post up pics and a video review when I have it. -
What happened to the pics?
