Alright I have been lurking since well today. I have been unable to turn up any definite answers to my question
I have and XPS 15. I chose option number 3 ($950)
Dell XPS 15 Laptop Details | Dell
It didnt have an option in customize to select screen type. So I assumed I was getting the 720p display. On my order list that I got it my email it says It has the 15.6 HDF TLF LCD.
Upon getting my laptop I notice it has the 1080p display (MONITOR\AUO17ED)
This is their higher end monitor correct?
this leads me to my next question. When i view my monitor from certain angles it has a red tint to it. I called support and they said this wasnt normal. So they are sending someone out soon to replace it.
My question is will they replace it with the same 1080p display? can I refuse to take the lower resolution display and ask for a 1080? Is the red tint something to worry about and will it get worse?
sorry for all the questions. Any help is appreciated.

1) Of course they must change on the same resolution (if they didn't make mistake from the beginning because I also see 720p)
2) about red tint... what color is on display before you try to see from the angle? what angle exactly? different display different view. Usually on old models you could see bad colors from little angles -
if you're referring to the bottom right corner of the screen appearing red (especially from top left angle) with the windows 7 aero desktop, that's normal.
-
Thanks james for the response. So they will most likely give me the same display?
The red tint only occurs when I look down at about a 30+ degree angle from the top of the monitor. And this isnt an old laptop, it was built this month, just got it on friday.
Im not sure if its just a characteristic of the display or if its an actual problem -
Not this isnt the issue, it is most noticeable int blacks and its an even red tint through the whole screen. Its not as bad when viewing from a side angle and its not even noticeable when viewing straight on
-
Not sure if it has changed but Option 3 on that page clearly lists the 720p screen:
Silver Anodized Aluminum 15.6" HD (720p) WLED Display with 2.0 MP webcam [Included in Price] -
Did you just receive this? If so, and you are not satisfied & there is a problem with your lappy, you have the right for a Brand New replacement..as you paid good money for it.
Just a thought for you. -
Yeah I noticed that but mine is definitely the 1080p screen.
A dell guy is coming out to replace the screen later this week. Im gonna ask him too look at my screen and see if it is normal and ask him if it will get worse. And then im gonna ask if he is putting in a 1080p screen. If not then im gonna keep this screen and deal with it.
Its not that bad, it all depends on what im viewing. Certain web pages wont show the tint, others will, certain programs wont show it. So its not something that is seen all the time -
well that doesn't mean that it MUST be not 1080p because you still can play 720p on Full HD right?
-
Ok...I hope it all works for you.
Sorry your having probls with the viewing. That would bother me quite a bit.
-
I also notice that the screen where I log into my user account(just after boot up) there is no red tint to be seen, accept at bottom right on the windows aero(which I hear is normal)
-
What does your configuration say on dell support? That is what support and probably the repair order would be based off--maybe?
-
well Im not sure what your talking about but this is what my laptop configuration says on their site
1 320-1672 15.6HDF TLF LCD L501X -
Stolen from elsewhere here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/537383-diff-between-15-6hdf-tlf-lcd-wled.html
Here's how the XPS 15 screens appear on the website and the order confirmation e-mail.
15.6" F(ull) H(igh) D(efinition) (1080p) B+RG = 15.6FHD TLF LCD L501X
15.6" HD (720p) WLED = 15.6HDF TLF LCD L501X
-------------------
So it's possible--they might go off that? -
So then whats the "F" mean in HDF
-
"Full" High def
-
Then judging by that my computer was supposed to come with a 1080p display
-
Well it's been made quite clear now I think.
If you have HDF then you don't get 1080p
If you have FHD then you do have 1080p
The letters are confusing and I think the person you just quoted didn't realise what you were asking as he implied the F in HDF meant full HD.. when infact that is the lower res screen -
Well either way mine came with the 1080p display. I dont know why they would word them so similar.
if the 1080p is FHD, why cant they label the lesser quality screen as WLED? -
In my opinion, they should just use numbers. Either state 1920x1080/1080p or 1280x720/720p or whatever, as long as it shows a resolution or a number followed by a p. Mine stated 1600x900 so why can't all the others?
-
same here. I expected the 720p but got a 1080p
-
Maybe they are making the 1080p screen standard??
-
Why still did not you call master? I thought he already had to come and give answer on this "question of the year"
-
well the guy should show up here anytime. Ill update this thread after the screen is replaced
-
UPDATE.
Guy came to replace my screen. I told him mine was the 1080p screen. He took my laptop apart and hooked up the new screen (which was a refurb) It was 720p. So he took it back out and called dell, He told them they shipped the wrong screen. He gave them the model number of my 1080p display and they informed him that they have it in stock and will overnight it to him.
So I should be getting my new 1080p display on thursday. I am very pleased. I didnt order my laptop with the 1080p display and it came with it. So basically im getting the 1080p at no cost to me. Which really is how it should be considering I paid for a brand new laptop and It shouldnt have any defects.
So hopefully on thursday my faith in Dell will be restored -
Glad to hear they are honoring the system as it ended up being shipped regardless of the ordered specs.
-
Yeah we will see how tomorrow is. I have read a bunch of times where people get sent the wrong stuff so hopefully they dont send me another 720p
Confused
