Does anyone know what we (all the people waiting to get their orders) should look for when we get it, in terms of physical imperfections?

I know someone here mentioned to watch out for the finish on the hinges and wires under the keyboard. Anything else worth highlighting?

    [Edit: Feb 15th]
    Okay, so thus far, thanks to everyones input, I have been able to create this list of things to check once I receive my laptop;

    Visual
    -Scratches
    -Cracks
    -Dents
    -Leather-trim tears
    -Poor craftsmanship
-Debris (Dust behind screen & keyboard)

    Design
-Lock (Lid opens & closes properly)
-Base (All 4 legs lay flat)
-Keyboard (All areas of keyboard lay flat)
-Wires underneeth (No wires are visible and/or blocking keys)

    Operational
    -Webcam
    -Trackpad (Zoom-feature)
    -Speakers (Balanced)
    -Blueray (if applicable)

    Accessories
    -Charger
-CD's (Windows Vista, Dell Resource, etc.)

    Is there anything I missed?

I am sorry, but why dont you just buy it and see if it does everything you want it to do? Do you really want to search for everything that someone thought is not perfect?
If YOU like it, it is perfect. If you dont, it isnt...

Btw. there is a XPS16 thread...

    Hey! ;)

That's simple..You look that sexy lappy over with a *fine tooth comb*.
~Checked for any scratches, cracks or any physical problems.
Does the lid close properly? How is the Screen on the inside? Does it sit level, any dings/cosmetic imperfections? :D
~Make sure all accessories, etc. are in the box (yes, it will arrived sealed, but still).. :D
~Turn that baby on, check out that all is running properly.
~Check out the fantastic guides on the forum..and do a Clean install if you want to *clean it up a bit*
~Make it yours! :D and last but not least ENJOY! :D

does doing a clean install free up more space and speed things up a bit more than just removing bloatware?

From what I've heard, simply removing bloatware will do the trick. Unless you're anal about maximizing free space and minimally increasing boot-up speed things up, it won't be necessary. I think I will wait a little while before I do a clean install, or at least until I'm done poking around the new laptop :D

there is no real bloatware, just a few programs i didnt care for. i took off mcaffee, the dell dock, some other small stuff. the main issue for me is the recovery partition. its 10 gig and its located before the os partition, so vista wont re-allocate that space back to the drive for me. ill have do download some program to do it. so that is probably the biggest advantage to re- fortmating. also i noticed the drivers on my machine are slightly newer than the drivers on the download site.

as far as imperfections- none, this machine is beautiful. and finish on the hinges? no - thats some morons not removing the protective plastic film that covers. the hinges are aluminum, there is no finish on aluminum.

the screen is bright, the keyboard is great, the webcam is one of the best qualities ive ever used, the machine is quieter, cooler, and faster than my previous dell. all around its an amazing machine. ive not seen a pc laptop with such attention to design detail. its also monochromatic coloring, so no childlike blue/green/red lights all over it. the thing is well built, i cant comment on how well it will age, only time will tell that. my guess is it will hold up much better than the grey scrap plastic on yesteryears laptops.

    good luck...

Just curious how? When I reformatted and reinstalled Vista, I had to download a bunch of unrecognized stuff from the download site. Where did you get newer drivers than what's provided by Microsoft or Dell?

So far there is nothing "I need to know" in this thread about the laptop.

Maybe you should change the title a bit because it sounds like you are going to summarize things people need to know.

Infact, it seems you are assuming there are things you need to know which you don't yet know, and for some reason I am going to need know them. :O

I actually was hoping people would start listing things one should check, like uneven keyboard, and visual imperfections. However it turned out to be a breeding ground for BTTF fans.

Okay, here are defects I notice right out of the box, of my BRAND NEW "premium" system. Really goes to show how poor Dell's quality control and engineering skills are.

    - big black dot inside the screen. dust/pixel/screen piece defect.
    - uneven base - wobbles if you tip the bottom right corner. (bottom as in the side close to the user)
    - Lid does not close perfectly, one of the corner lifts up.
    - Metal ring around the base of the laptop is loose, dust, specs, fingernails....can easily go in.
    - uneven keyboard
    - uneven speakers, they stick out a little bit more than the rest of the surface.
    - Uneven hinge
    - The led large gap between the outside piece of the lid and the inside piece of the lid, near the hinge area. Large as in, you can fit your fingernail in there and it gives to it, loose like a hore.

I think that's about it. Go figure.

i would, it sounds like your computer was hit buy a truck. where was it manufactured, which plant? maybe your plant has issues. it sounds like a refurb. and if you are returning systems under warranty for another its not uncommon to be given a refurb, you should definitely check.

First replacement after purchase (w/in 21 days of invoice) is a *new* lappy. After that, the replacement is usually a refurb'. :(
