I have a Dell L702x with the 750GB Hybrid Drive and an empty slot.

Can I add a 750GB SSD and image the entire original drive onto that and then use the SSD as the primary?

Or perhaps move the 750GB Hybrid Drive into a RAID 1 configuration, making it a mirror?

Is it as simple as imagining it and then swapping them?

You can use the free trial of macrium reflect to clone it as it has the ability to sort the boot side of things if you prefer not to clean install. you should clean install tbh and use the hybrid for storage and the true SSD for windows. That way all you need to do it copy the users folder to the root of the drive and get rid of the rest once the SSD is setup.

macrium reflect is what I use.

It does not deal well with encrypted HD however. On another machine (Sun Ultra 40M2 ) I used VeraCrypt and then imaged it to another HD and it somehow wiped out the main booting sector and it no longer booted.. Just FYI Macrium Reflect is very good but it does not deal with encrypted HDs.

I will have to decrypt the L702x to do the imaging / cloning.

Any brand name recommendations? Who makes a SSD that has the exact same space as the default 750GB hybrid drive? So I can easily clone it.

obviously no one does as it's a hybrid drive but besides that it should just clone so long as it is decrypted.
