I have a Dell Windows recovery disk from a previous machine and want to make sure I can use it with a XPS 15 before I order the machine.
The disk I have looks like this (not my photo)......

With my previous machine I just installed using the disk and didn't have to enter a key or anything for it to register, is the same true on the L502x?

You'll be fine using that disc. You won't need a key as the installation with identify your system as Dell and install an OEM version.
If you're interested on reading more into it, research SLIC tables although obviously you already have the Dell table from purchase. -
Did you buy Windows 7 Professional on your L502x? Looks like that CD is locked to only install Professional, although with a few tools I don't have time to mention, you can't unlock it and use whatever version you need.
Unless you're running the same version you bought OEM, you will eventually need to enter a key to activate your copy. -
As I said in the OP I haven't bought my L502x yet but I'm intending to order Win 7 Pro 64 bit.
Could anyone post a photo of their recovery disk please. -
Alright, listen close, cause I'm not gonna say it again. There are three types of media concerning windows.
1.) Install Disk
2.) Repair Disk
3.) Recovery Disk
The install and repair functions are on the same disk. You can do either function using that one disk.
The recovery disk must be burned to a CD/DVD by the computer running that OS at the time.
Just order the OS DVD when you order your laptop. It's only $15, and it's that simple.

In the OP I stated clearly that I hadn't yet bought my L502x but your response asks me if I'd ordered it with Win 7 Pro, I then ask for someone to post a photo of their disk and you post a nonsense diatribe unrelated to the request, phrased by you as if I didn't know what I was asking for.
If you're unable to understand a simple request please stop commenting in the thread.
So can you post a photo of your disk or not? -
Having read up on SLIC tables I assume that any genuine Dell Reinstallation Disk should work with any Dell machine (that supports SLIC obviously).
I'd be interested to see if the Reinstallation disk supplied with the L502x at extra cost is the same as the one I already have.
Surely this means that if I had an Ultimate Win 7 64bit disk it would in theory install without asking for any keys? -

Presumably M$ know which edition of W7 has been activated on or licensed for a given hardware ID? Otherwise that'd be a slightly glaring hole! That's based on an assumption that SLIC includes a fingerprint or ID for the device, rather than the OEM - haven't found a particularly good description, beyond pwnage type discussions... -

Yes you can use it!
Could someone with a L502x recovery disk post a photo of it?
