So i recieved my brand new dell studio xps 1645 a couple of days ago and everything is perfect. I love the system.
Starting early last night i noticed a slight crackling noise coming from the adapter. It sounded like an electrical problem within the power brick itself but i'm not an electrician. So I immediately called dell and told them the situation. They had me go through a series of restarts, shutdowns, and even updated my bios for me, but still no solution. Fortunately dell will be shipping me a replacement adapter and power cord.
I just wanted to know whether others have experienced this problem before.

Bah, old issue..... It will be the same even after the replacement.. It should settle down after some time..
-
dont worry it will make noise because its trying to get out, but it will die eventually and your adapter will run quietly -
Is this a crackling noise or more of a "fizzing" noise? My AC adapter is making that noise too, but mine is a 1640. It happens whenever there is a lot of CPU activity, and happens only every once in a while. The noise lasts for less than a second. Hopefully the new AC adapter will remedy this. It's not a big thing, but still.

If u ever tried eating the candy pop rocks, It sounds exactly like that. Its not only CPU usage that triggers the crackling noise, whenever the power brick gets warm, the slightest activity like scrolling up and down a webpage will make it crack like crazy. The noise is low, but its not low enough to not notice it. By this i mean u can clearly hear something is crackling even though the tv's on and it isn't showing any signs of going away. Hopefully the new adapter won't have this problem.

if it is some kind of material frying, then it will go away in time.
if its more of an electrical zzzzzzzz, then thats just how it sounds... -
Hi!
I had similar problem with my original power adapter. Dell promptly replaced it. So far, no noise. -
-
did you guys have to send your bad adapter back to Dell after they sent you the new one?

Dell sends you a fedex shipping sticker along with the new adapter. The new adapter also comes with instructions to send the old adapter back to them so its pretty easy. All you need to do is put the defective adapter into the box, stick the new sticker directly on top of the one already on the box, seal, and then send it back to them.
