I'm running into some a lot of problems while running Windows Media Player. Even on smaller, 300mb avi files, the CPU will sometimes hit 100 (both). MKV files are a complete write-off. Any ideas?

I have 4GB ram (yes, I know I can only use 3.5) and 2x2.3 processors.

Which codecs are you using? That's where I would start and try different ones. I have had great success with the K-lite Coded pack.

I have the same problem... its not a 100% usage but around 20-50% usage.
And yes I use the klite codec pack.

I dont know about age99 but Im talking about music listening not video playback. I have Vista

I recall doing this for some reason:

File > Tools > Options > Library Tab > "Delete files from computer when deleted from library"

It did alleviate the CPU usage, but what I'm thinking that WMP is doing is that it's searching for media files. This happens if you ran WMP for the first time or recently updated it.

Full specs of your PC would be nice for starters however.

Do you have media library sharing enabled?
It could be a problem relating to this from my experience
    try disabling it
