    Hi all,

Sorry - have had no luck trying to find out how to successfully implement this, but I'm aiming to enable 1600x900 on my Dell XPS 16 1645 (with 4670).

The reason - to have a good balance between resolution and performance in games! 1080p rocks, but I think this slight resolution reduction will improve performance, while still preserving reasonably good image quality (I can't stand interpolating down to 720p).

The video/monitor driver doesn't have 1600x900 enabled, though.

How do I enable this mode? (Win7x64, latest Catalyst)

    Thanks heaps!

    cheers,
    dave

You don't change the resolution in windows, that looks yuck. When you are in whatever game, go into graphics or video settings and you can choose the resolution settings there. Games are very good at scaling down and I don't even notice playing 900p on my 1080p screen... except for the nice boost in framerates that is ;)

If the option doesn't show up in the game, try downloading a program called PowerStrip, which will allow you to setup custom resolutions.

Unless you pay $30 for the full version, it will display an annoying tips box on startup, but you can remove PowerStrip from your startup programs list so it only comes up when you start up the program, not when you start up your computer.

You could also try 960x540, an exact 1/4 reduction of resolution, I'm curious if that will look blurry or not.

    try this.
go to regedit and follow this step.

    /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/CLASS/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000

Then on the right side, find "DALNonStandardModesBCD1"
double click it, then enter this number on lowest line
    16 00 09 00 00 00 00 60
    then click OK, then restart
Then try again to adjust your resolution in games, the option for 1600x900 should be available after that. :)

Thanks! This solution worked beautifully ;p

I had found a similar registry key and adjusted it in the same way previously - which had no effect... but your key (under control/class etc) did the trick!

Thanks tons - my framerates are now well above 40fps mostly in SCII with high-ultra settings! I'll have to work out eventually which I prefer - the full HD looks amazing, but can become unplayable at times...

    cheers,
    dave
