    Hi

    Windows Vista

the laptop enters sleep mode (stand by), after close lid, and now it won't wake up!

I have tried clicking keys, restarting, shutdown, without battery only electr., etc. And nothing. Not runs. Displays black screen

I can not enter to BIOS, I can not use CD-ROM....Is sleeping

    How I can solve it?

    Probably your 8400m is dead.

    Or maybe just try this:
Take out the battery and power cord.
Hold the power button for 1 min.
Put the battery and power cord back and try to boot.

Actually dell will say the motherboard is dead when really the GPU is the part that failed.

Tell dell to fix it for free because it's a known fault and they should have recalled the notebook.
I think they might even have free extended warranty for the faulty 8400m and 8600m.
The G86 and G84 cores have a known fault, just google it.

You could try this if they wont fix it:
    width='560' height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NJlgPbELL0E&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NJlgPbELL0E&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width='560' height="340"></embed></object>

if its a known fault and they have not recalled the notebook its sub-standard equipment. Dell should replace it jusat mention trading standards to them on the phone they'll soon have a engineer coming to pick it up in no time :)

Dell will repair GPU failed motherboards for one year past warranty date expires for free.

Short version: move the laptop's screen through it's full range of motion 2 or 3 times and try booting.

    Long version:
This happened to me twice. The first time (Sep2009), there was a CD stuck in the drive, as well as the laptop being stuck in sleep mode. I disassembled the laptop to retrieve the CD, and when I reassembled, the laptop worked fine. The dis and reassembly took me 3 hours, so at the time I thought that the 3 hours without power and battery helped get it out of sleep mode.

This happened to me again today (Apr2010). With some research I found a suggestion that the hinge could at fault, such that the laptop thinks it is physically shut although it is not. My disassembly the first time may have reset the hinge.

This time, I tried the no-power approach (but no disassembly), leaving the laptop unplugged and without the battery for three hours, and then I moved the screen through the hinge's full range of motion before I put the battery back in and turned it on. It booted fine. I was an hour into the no-power approach when I found the hinge suggestion, so I decided to wait out the next two hours. Next time I will go straight to exercising the hinge, so to speak, and save three hours.

    Hi there
I think I have the same problem, put my xps m1530 to sleep and would not wake up. Have forced shutdown by holding in power button and now will not turn on. It only displays a black screen and I can hear fans and hard drive spinning. How do I know if it is the motherboard or the GPU that has failed? Its 3 months out of warranty

Hey, this has happened to me before and just today, too. Both times, I had the DVD in the DVD drive and I had the laptop connected through an HDMI connection to my HDTV.
I have a feeling I have the same problem as you.
Would you recommend I disassemble the laptop and get the CD out (I don't think there's an easy way of getting the CD out from the slot-load DVD drive)?
Or, should I do the hinge method (which I don't understand)? If you could elaborate on this, it would be awesome.
Last time this happened to me, I had to pay several hundred dollars to my repair shop guy to fix it. :(

Hey, I seem to be having a similar problem with my xps m1530.
The hinge method didn't seem to work. Other people said hold the button for 30 seconds, then wait 5, then press it again, and that didn't work. Tomorrow I'm going to put a hairdryer to the VGU to see if heating it up fixes it, but I was wondering if anyone else found a solution.
