    Hi,
i have a dell xps l502x, recently i opened the laptop to clean the exhaust i followed a guide to properly disassemble it. after i finished and started my laptop both of my usb 3 ports are not working only the usb 2/sata one is working.
i reinstalled the usb drivers and still nothing.
i m pretty sure i haven't damaged the port but it seems unresponsive.
    can some one help me.
    PLEASE

    Thanks

take a look in the control panel > device menu and see if the USB 3 ports show any errors.

or if they are even listed in the menu.

from what I see the USB 3 ports are on a daughter board on the left side, it is possible the ribbon cable may have come loose

may want to open things up and check it.

forgot to ask, is there any unknown devices listed in the device menu at all ?

You can try re-installing the chipset drivers, and then try the USB 3 driver again.

it maybe worth checking the BIOS menu and see if by chance the USB 3 port has an enable / config option.

if not, then it is possible your USB board is dead, Hopefully the problem is the USB board or the ribbon cable. question is was this damaged when you cleaned things, or just co-incidence that the ports failed.

could this be the problem ?

    it could be yes,

Try installing in regular mode not in safe mode - not all services run in safe mode.

if you still get that error it may indicate a problem with some of the windows system files.

Time for a back up of any data / files / programs you have

Data loss can be either from a pending hard drive failure or a virus

there are several things to consider at this point.

    1. Run Dell Diagnostics and see if any problems are detected < Specifically hard drive
    2. Try Windows recovery
    3. Run a more comprehensive virus scan
    4. Fresh install of the OS and drivers < my personal choice

How old is the hard drive in this laptop?

2.5 years is a decent run for a laptop drive

You may want to consider upgrading the hard drive anyways
