Is budget a concern? With CAD and engineering XX as your primary concern, why not look at Dell's business line, like Latitude or Precision. They offer much better build quality than Dell's consumer line, and offer professional GPU solutions geared towards CAD (Quadro/FirePro).

Simply put, if you need the quad core processing power then go for XPS 15. I have it, and my only wish was that it shared the thinness of 15z and the keyboard's silver finish.

In my opinion, dual core i7s aren't worth it... i5s are practically the same CPUs as dual core i7s.

Definitely get the 502x. This comes from a prior engineering student. I have the 702x and am blown away at how well it does things like Solidworks and the like, and the 502x won't be far behind in that regard.

Get a quad core CPU. Don't even consider a dual for engineering work. Also get the 540m. And the FHD. All of these are in the 502x config you listed.

All of those things you listed in your last post are software. Facial recognition is not all that great imo, perhaps others find differently. The Creative software is just that: audio tweaking software. Not required, you get the same awesome speakers either way. Roxio is decent but there are alternatives on the market, many even free.
