There are dark grey marks on both side of the palm rest on my M1210 palm rest which doesn't come off no matter what i use on it. There were never there until i cleaned my laptop with some iso-propyl alcohol. I wiped the whole laptop and around the two palm rest area, silver stuff were coming off my laptop and transferring into onto my cloth. The place where the silver things come off became a big dark spot on my laptop.

    ANy solutions to the problem?

I have put a picture of the probelm as my avatar. Please have a look.

The rubbing alcohol probably took off some of the finish on the palmrest. Once it's gone, there's not much you can do short of re-painting or re-finishing the palmrest. Or you could buy a new one.

I tried the alcohol on the other parts of the laptop and this did not occur, so it is not the alcohol.

I'm sorry kwokie, but it is the alcohol. I cleaned mine with isopropyl last year, and immediately got the same dark blemishes on each side of the touchpad area, just like in your picture.

I started by cleaning the keyboard, and that was just fine. Then I moved to the palmrest area, and immediately got the dark stains.

By the way, isn't the m1210 a bad***? Mine's three years old and I'm just now replacing it.

I'm getting another XPS, since I was so happy with the last one, and because they're good for Ubuntu linux. I ordered it 10/6. It's a Studio XPS 13, 2.53GHz, 4G RAM, 500GB 7200RPM HD, 512MB nVidia 210M GPU, WLED screen, and the rest of the default stuff.

That does look like a nice machine, but there are no good GPU options.

I'm surprised neither of you have had failed GPU's on your 1210's yet.

I learned my lesson the hard way. Stay away from Dell, the quality is crap.

Well, I've learned that Dell has a high-quality product that can be relied upon to work flawlessly for years. I've used this m1210 almost literally every day for over three years, carrying it around everywhere, and it's just been solid.

Maybe I just got lucky, maybe you just got unlucky, or maybe, just maybe, you're taking a chance no matter who you buy from.

    Take this

    and this

for what it's worth. The fact of the matter is that Dell distributed faulty GPU's and did NOT include all computers with the faulty chips in their warranty extension program.

HP had a warranty extension program that covered each and every laptop they distributed with this die packaging issue. Dell hoped that none of the M1210 owners would notice or care that their laptops inevitably suffer a catastrophic failure.

Their proprietary AC adapter system also shows that Dell does whatever it takes to make a buck, even if it's at the expense of their customers.

Sorry for derailing the subject. I just hate seeing people giving their money to a company that treats its customers like this. This behavior should not be tolerated or supported.
