I have a Dell XPS with Windows XP installed. My CD player reads CDs fine but I can't write to a blank CD or DVD. Any recommendations?

Is it still under warranty? I've had this happen a few times (on other computers, don't have an XPS) and the reason has always been that the drive (or at least the writing part) went kaput. You'll need a replacement drive.

Dell is saying it's a software problem and they've voided my warranty because I removed Vista and installed XP. They refuse to send a tech out because they insist it's a driver problem.

There must XP DVD drivers out there, no?

That is absolute BS. Warranty only covers hardware.

They cannot void your warranty for that, though they can stop giving you help and support because you do not have Vista Installed.

What program are you using to burn stuff?

I know, it's bogus. They're saying that because it's a "software problem" they won't help. And because they've determined it's a "software problem" it can therefore not be a "hardware" problem (and my warranty, which they claim is now invalid anyway, only would cover a hardware problem.)

    I'm using Nero 9.

make an image of your WinXP and save it.

than restore your M1530 to original Vista settings (either from CDs you received, or you can request them for free from Dell). Than test your CD-RW burner. If it works, it is indeed the software problem with XP. However, if it doesn't work, Dell will replace it under warranty.

I have M1530 with XP running on it, no problems using Nero 9 or Roxio Easy Creator 10

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll give them a try (and all the while curse Windows Vista and Dell tech support.)
