When i load a disk the drive tries to spin up three of times but then stops. I've tried several discs and it's the same each time so it's not the disc, only started happening today. I've tried reinstalling the driver but to no avail. Maybe some dirt got in there? I read of some utility to test the drive but i can't find it.

Dell XPS M1330, Windows 7 ultimate.

    Cheers.

Thanks Tinderbox. I'll post once i've tested. I also have vista on another drive so i can try with that if all else fails. I've hardly used the drive so seems odd; are these drives prone to failure?

I forgot to say the drive is a Mata UJ-857G. Couldn't do anything wit hcdspeed... It looks like a hardware fault so i'm going to run diagnostics on it (if i can from a flash drive).

Couldn't run diagnostics, it's just not reading discs. I'll give Dells' tech support a call tomorrow. Cheers!

It worked briefly this morning but hasn't worked again since then. Could it be some dirt on the laser? Is there any way to test the drive for faults? it's showing up as normal in the bios and device manager, it's just not reading discs...

My m1330 drive also seems to be not working properly. CDs and dvds read just fine, its the burning thats the issue. I was burning a dvd and got a error midway. How did you diagnose your problem?

During boot press F12 then Diagnostics. Which drive do you have? I've read about a burning issue with the Mata drives. Do you get an error code or anything? Anyway, diagnostics confirmed the drive was faulty and an engineer is coming out to replace it. :)
