Here is a mess about damaged NVidia GPU chips in XPS1530 models.
What's the problems and how you need to take care of it?![]()
-
The mess is a damaged die/construction that could cause the card to overheat and fail. Dell has released a bandaid BIOS fix that just runs your fans more often lol
-
Ya. Ive played counter strike on extremely high for four hours then switched to bft and ut3 for 10 hours of game time no overheating......
-
Yeah at first mine hit a scoring 94c on Age of Empires 3 without OCing, then I added ArticSilver done some undervolting bla bla and the new BIOS and now I don't pass over 74c on Crysis all High settings and Im overclocked to 680/1360/950

I don't think it's the overheating that's causing the primary damage, it's the fluctuation in temperatures along with the extreme heat if it's not kept in check. The design of the thermal cooling system is suspect as well, maybe more so on the cramped and thermally challenged M1330. You might never see a GPU meltdown, but it takes time for it to take effect. My M1330's motherboard took 6 months before it went south after too much gaming and video editing.

I agree with callanish. The temperature fluctuation causes different materials in the GPU chip packaging to expand and contract at different rates. If the packaging is not manufactured properly, over time this can cause failure.
-
So it's better to wait DELLs Montevina on XPS i guess.
-
That's what I'm doing. Anyone aware of this issue should have the sense to avoid any notebook with these video cards inside, especially the M1330 with its poor thermal design/envelope. A good price now won't spare you the aggravation you'll experience when your GPU fails in 6-12 months. New notebooks are coming very soon with cooler-running, better Nvidia 9 series cards or ATI cards.
-
Frankly, I would.

I was gonna wait, but then I got this Montevina laptop

I was gonna wait ... but I needed a laptop now because I am going away to college. The price was right and it's all covered under warranty. At the college I am going to they have Dell technicians right on campus anyways so I'm not worrying about a thing.
-
Not bad, I probably will get a P9500.
-
...and we just got through the screen issue....depending on how my lappy comes back I may have lost faith...I have had 2 desktops and no problems....oh well...we shall see...maybe when they replace the GPU as well while they got it in the shop for another issue..LOL.... may have to take a leap over to the dark side and score a MBP next time...
