Although I don’t understand the language (german?), I think the comparison is between CCFL WXGA (unknown) and CCFL WXGA+ (LG-Phillips).

It looks like WXGA+ LG is really good screen. Good brightness and good contrast.

i have 2 dell m1330 and one sony FE (15") in front of me - one dell with LED and the one with CCFL.

the LED is MUUUUCH better than the CCFL. The CCFL actually looks like s##t compared to the LED-Display (you have to see it - images don't show the difference very well).

But: The 2 year old Sony 15" FE without LED is looks much better and is even brighter than the Dell with LED. I've not seen a single notebook-display up to now beating Sony.

perhaps because Sony is one of the few that use dual lamp screens

I'm glad I got the LED rather than the T9300

You're right, translation reveals it's LG. The XPS only uses a CHi Mei LED panel. Comparison pics on this site between the WXGA CCFL and WXGA+ LED do reveal the LED to be brighter. The only CHi Mei LED panel on their site is spec'd at over 300 nits, so I guess it's fair to say the LED should be about equal or better than the WXGA+ CCFL LG pane.

That was my choice too. I was down to either regular 1440x900 and a T9300 or the LED and T8300. I went with the LED since I'm already upgrading from an AMD 3700.

Before you guys go and get boners over LED panels there's something you seem to be forgetting, the led panels generate significant heat, I see this as prohibitive in a laptop certainly desktop led lcd's and tv's generate considerable more heat and require additional cooling and ventilation. I dont see anyone running out to make a well ventilated laptop chassis for an led lcd panel on your laptops and laptops are already confined spaces with poor ventilation generating heat.

Err did anyone actually read the revised post or look at the links properly? The comparison really just shows how much brighter LG screens are than the other screen reviewed (whatever that is).

I'm no avid LED fan, but to the poster above, as if heat is going to be an issue. The screen is isolated from the rest of the chassis so it's not like it's going to affect heat critical components, AND you don't have to touch the screen or lid excessively. Big moot point right there.

I agree with Udi, I was torn between 1920x1200 and the LED screen, but due to people saying the LED is brighter and more vivid I chose the LED instead.

Um. I have the 1440x900 LED on my M1530, and it never gets warm. Cool as a cucumber, in fact. I don't know what you are talking about. The reason LED's are sooo much more efficient than other backlights is that they don't waste any energy producing heat.

Hello, I presume you have the Chi Mei screen? How is it? Is it worth getting? Any grainyness or other issues? How is the color reproduction? Thanks!

All LED screens on the M1530 are Chi Mei screens. I have it for my M1530 as well and there is no graininess, great color reproduction, brighter, no issues whatsoever. Trust me, once you use an LED screen, you will never want to go back to CCFL.

From my time here on this forum, there are many who have returned their 1920 CCFLs for LED 1440's, but everyone who has had LED 1440's have been satisfied except for 2 people. One of which had a defective screen, and a replacement fixed the issue.

However all the 1920 CCFL screens are made by Samsung and MANY have reported graininess, dim, and various other issues that even replacements didn't help.

1680 WSXGA+'s are hit or miss as there is a chance to get an LG CCFL one which is better than average CCFLs in terms of brightness and much better than the Samsung screens, but they no longer offer 1680 resolution.

So, all in all, unless you really really want the full HD though have lower screen quality compared to what LED offers, I highly recommend getting the LED. You will NOT regret it. I myself had very huge issues trying to decide at the time of my purchase which screen to go with since I myself have been used to 1680 WSXGA+ resolution and I do not regret going with the 1440 LED.

Aside from brightness and better color reproduction, it offers better contrast, saves battery, and is lighter than CCFL displays.

Thanks for the quick response! Yes, I heard a lot of bad things about the 1680 screen. My brother has a 1530 with that screen. It's not the grainy one, but I don't understand how people can use 15" at that res. I currently have a 1280*800 and wanted to step up, so I ordered the LED mainly for it's resolution. In the US, the 1440 regular (CCFL?) screens are probably not being made any more cause I don't see it as an option. So are you the girl in the pic?

For me, 1680 was perfect, but seeing full WUXGA on a 15.4 inch laptop... it was way too small to be usable. 1440 regular is CCFL, you made the right choice in ordering the LED. I was shocked at how dim my previous 15.4'' laptop was by Dell and get a smile on my face whenever I see other laptops that are new, but because they are CCFL, are dimmer and don't have as great colors compared to mine. :)

If you think about it, the brighter display with better colors also helps lessen eyestrain. Like other girls, I prefer to protect my privacy and not say, but I do take that as a complement for you asking! ;) :) :) :)

Well I'm keeping my fingers crossed! lol
Don't worry about the privacy thing it's just pretty rare to find a geek girl so I asked. One of the things I need to do when I get it is swap out the hard disk and put in a 7200rpm one that I have, and also replace the OS with my Vista Business license, which I need for some of the stuff I do.

The FE is definitely an exception, as said before its dual CCFL and is one of the brightest laptops screens around at IIRC 400nits. Most CCFL LCD screens are in the 100-250 nit range (yes, 100, my Asus A8Js was about 120nit according to notebookcheck).

LED's have come a long way and are pretty good. I needed 1440 x 900 and got lucky with my LG, it's so crisp and brilliant. Ordering 1680 x 1050 or higher on a 15.4" is like asking for eye problems in 5-7 years.
