I can't believe my eyes, but I am looking at the regular xps 17, and there it is, the option for 1080p with no mention of 3D!

Is this true or am I somehow living in a dream world?

The Dell Online Store: Build Your System

I will be ordering this laptop within the next 48hrs and will be happy to write a review of the screen upon arrival. I do need just a quick amount of help with the build though and would really appreciate anyones input on the machine I built so far. Let me know what you think :)

Seems that way; though it looks like price doesn't budget much, if at all, without 3D

i agree. but a lot of people, me included, would actually pay a small amount NOT to have 3D because it disables Optimus and we won't use it anyway.

B+RG is WLED. This probably is the same screen. There aren't many to choose from.

WLED = Blue LED w/ Yellow phosphor
    B+RGLED = Blue LED w/ Red & Green phosphors

They're slightly different, and B+RGLED provides a wider colorspace.

    I don't even know if a B+RGLED 17.3" FHD panel exists.

It's a glossy screen in the USA. Even though it's listed as an anti glare screen in this comparison chart(click the "compare side by side" link on this page). I checked with 2 sales reps and both said it was a glossy screen.

Dell - Help Me Choose: Display

I'm hoping they come out with an anti glare(matte) option and I'll buy one. They were offering the anti glare version in Australia.

The advantage of the non 3D, 1080p screen is that Optimus should work. The battery life should last longer and the fan probably won't run as much. It should cost $100 to $200 cheaper too. The disadvantage is you only get 2 DIMM slots. You get no 3D. And the screen might not be as nice as the 3D screen(brightness and contrast ratios are lower).

Hopefully, we'll soon get some reviews of the non 3D, 1080p screens.

Too bad as my laptop is arriving on Monday and I could not change it. Besides, I am looking at the availability of 4 DIMM slots and only a 3D screen + 3G GT555M with 3D capable gpu will satisfy my hunger.

Besides, such option is not available on the Dell UK website...

OMG. I am so depressed to say this, but all of a sudden the option for a non 3D xps 17 of any screen has suddenly become unavailable? are others experiencing this? WHAT THE #$@$ IS GOING ON??

update: when you go to the XPS homepage and choose the regular 17" option, it directs you straight to the 3D xps page (WTH?). however, when you go to the general laptop page and sort by screen size, you can go to the regular xps 17 and customize. what the heck is going on? is it risky to order this when it seems like maybe they are pulling the option?

Ordered mine about a week ago, no option for a 1080p, two or three days after i ordered, i saw a 1080p option. This option just came up, i called and immediately cancelled the first one so that i could have a true HD screen, none of that 900 bs, glad they finally added that option and glad i caught it before it was too late to cancel.

Thank you InsidePokerMan for this thread!

I was on Dell's site last night looking at the XPS17 once again after returning my new Sager NP1570. The Sager turned out to have sub par fit and finish amoung other things (very poor sound, touchpad, build, etc...). Anyway I noticed the XPS17 1080p screen without 3D and I thought I was imagining things or it was a typo. It was one of the reasons I went with Sager to begin with. But it turns out Dell was listening after all in offering us this option!

Also a big thanks also to GoBolts! I placed an order today and saved $400!!! :D

To confirm, though, neither 17" screen has the contrast and brightness of the 15" RGBLED? How big is the difference in quality?

Every time I go through this same configuration it comes out at a different price! I tried to stack Dell's "instant savings" onto the $400 coupons, but it didn't work. It kept the $100 one and replaced the $300 one. I thought that was fine since Dell's "instant savings" was $474 (which is more than $300), but the final price was still higher because the "market value" started out higher. All of these different coupon/savings bundles make it tedious to find the actual lowest price!

This link ( XPS 17 Laptop - Feel the Thrill with 3D Laptop Screen | Dell) shows the middle configuration with $474 worth of savings, yet building it yourself from that starting point with the $400 coupons gives you a price that is $100 less. Arghhh!!

What is the actual lowest price of this configuration?!

Here is the best I could do for the system I ended up ordering last night. The California tax and screen recycling deposit (should be $8, not $6) sux!

I started off with the cheapest base system with no discounts and added everything from there. Since I will upgrade the hard drive and optical drive once it is delivered, I went for lowest cost options in these categories. I then added the $400 in coupons and I received another 3% for using my Dell account. I will also be credited 4% of the total price from eBates next month.

In the end, I should have another nice test/work system for $1362 delivered.

Heres what I ended up ordering. The base model seems to be the less expensive way to go if you’re using the $400 coupon codes. It comes with a 500GB HD instead of 640 but I’ll be upgrading to an SSD as soon as I get it. I live in Oregon, so no sales tax. With free shipping coupon my total was $1,398.99.

Does anyone know if the non 3D GT555M comes with DDR3 or DDR5 vRAM? And is it confirmed the non 3D xps 17 will only have 2 RAM slots?

Back to the topic of non-3D 1080p panels...

Any sightings of this option in Europe yet? Any reliable information from Dell, anyone?
