    Hello all,

My webcam and mic used to work just fine. Now, all of a sudden, both are not being recognized. They do not even show up in device manager. I have no idea what the issue could be. I have tried re installing drivers, but that did not work.

    All help is greatly appreciated.

Maybe the cable connecting them to the motherboard got disconnected.. not pretty sure , did you drop the laptop?

I have not recently dropped my laptop.

The weird thing is, it looks as if it the mic and webcam have just disappeared. There isn't even an "Imaging Devices" category where I assume the webcam would have been categorized. I am not sure about the mic. If they were disconnected from the motherboard, then at least there would be a little exclamation symbol showing it is now missing. Here is what my device manager currently looks like:

    Resize the damn picture!

As to a possible solution, switch off the computer ( NOT sleep or hibernate ) and remove the battery for a couple of minutes. Then put it back in and boot up again.

If you are confident enough you could try to open up the LCD panel and check that all the cables are stably connected.

That actually reminds me. I had a dell technician come to my home to replace what I though was a malfunctioning motherboard. I used my webcam and mic the day before that and it worked perfectly, he probably forgot to connect some of the appropriate cables.

Does this sound like it would be the issue?

If it hasn't worked since, then yea, something didn't get hooked up right.

Glad to hear it. My rule one when something doesn't work: is it plugged in??? You'd be surprised just how often this is the problem...

    Example:
The fan on my l702x in sig. was not turning on consistently and my system would often hit 95C in Firefox doing nothing but browsing, and throttle down to 792MHz CPU. Dell tech over the phone tried to tell me the fan would come on as needed. After screaming at him that "WHAT PART OF 95C AND THROTTLING THE CPU DOWN TO 792MHZ AND STILL NO FAN DO YOU NOT GET???" (this was after 15 minutes of him going on and on about how the cooling works-and half of it was flat wrong) he decided to send a new heatsink/fan. Acceptable answer, as the fan could have been defective too. The tech came, in the box from Dell was 2 heatsinks  ...I convinced the tech to open up the system anyway, as I suspected a loose fan connector. Sure enough, when he got in there, the connector was barely hanging on to the header. This came out of the factory this way...Ever since that, the fan works perfectly, never hit 90C since.
