    Hi all,

I just received my new L502x. Apart from the annoying fan on/off problem (is there a fix for that?), most things seem to be okay.

I have a big issue with the screen however. I've got the 1080p display, which is fantastic, except I'm getting this faint white band, about 3 inches wide which stretches the length of the screen (top to bottom). It's most prominent when watching videos.

I've updated to the latest nVidia drivers (280.26) and tried changing resolution, but it's still there. I really hope this is just a software issue and not something actually wrong with the screen. I've searched around and can't find anyone else with this problem, but maybe I've missed it.

    Please help!

    Thanks

You have to format the computer with a clean (MSDN-like) Windows 7 iso.

That definitely doesn't look like it's a software problem. If you want to be absolutely certain though, check if you can still see the white band in the CMOS setup screen.

Well I can't see it in the BIOS screen, but that may well be because the colours are such that it's impossible to see. I really don't know.

Try to kill Toaster.exe process by using the CTRL ALT DEL

Have already done that to fix the full screen gap problem.

I still think it's most definitely a hardware (faulty connector or screen) issue. You're right that you may not be able to see it in the CMOS setup screen because the color scheme there is really simple. You should call Dell and try to get a replacement.

I'm gonna try running a 3D game so that it starts using the discrete graphics chip.

The screen is something you look at all the time and is the centrepiece of the laptop. Request a brand new replacement ASAP.

Will be phoning up tomorrow morning to do just that.

Whats the deal with replacements? Will they come and pick it up and make me wait another 3 weeks for a replacement to come through? (I'm in the UK by the way)

Phoned Dell, they wanted to collect and replace the laptop (erm I don't think so!). Pushed them, and they then said they would send an engineer round the following morning, which he duly did and replaced the screen for me. No more problems as far as I can tell *fingers crossed*
