I'm interested in buying this laptop.

Are there any problems I should be aware of? Are there any overheating problems, also is this laptop really thick?

i'd feel so self-conscious and weird dragging that thing to lectures and class. i don't think i've seen anyone haul around and set up something as big as a 17" notebook for school w/o looking dorky. they're all big.

but the 17" XPS would look worse because of its tacky 'look at me i'm a gamer!' design. you might as well have a giant robot's head with flashing LED eyes sticking out of the cover.

The M1730 looks normal if you get the smoke colored wing plates and shut down all the extra lighting effects. I'll post a picture later when I get the chance. But yes, it is HUGE compared to most other laptops. :D

I had mine for almost 4 months and it's the fastest laptop I have had to date and if you like going to lan parties, it's the perfect lan party gaming rig that can be hauled around with ease. So far I have had zero heating issues with it, I run mine at 3.2Ghz which keeps the fans running all the time, this keeps things nice and cool and is not that noisy either.Anyway that is my opinions after having mine for a while.

You can change the color of the led's on the speakers and touchpad, I believe that is what they are talking about.

I would recommend picking a good backpack if you're going to use this around campus. I have a messenger style bag and it definetly strains my shoulder to carry this laptop just for a few mins, nevermind 15-30mins around campus.

If you know anyone that can get you a dell epp code that's the way to go. I saved roughly $1200 on my m1730.

To me, the XPS M1730 looks nice but not too flashy with all lights out.

The current targus 17" backpack works quite well for my XPS M1730 -- well padded all around with lots of room if needed.

    Here's the one I use: http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=TXL617

Padding is excellent, and there are no hard buckles to scratch your precious cargo while in transit (unlike the 17" Swiss army backpacks).

I forgot to mention that my local Best Buy stocks these 17" Targus backpacks regularly.
