So, I just spent about 20 minutes on the phone with Dell trying to get a 64-bit version of Vista Home Premium. To my utter surprise they are sending it out without any kind of hassle. I simply explained to the gentleman that I received the 32-bit version, but was interested in getting the 64-bit version instead. I also told him I had no problem with sending the 32-bit disc back to them, again to my surprise he said " that wouldn't be necessary". He did have to request approval, but upon doing so the techs supervisor said there was a problem with their system and to go ahead and send a copy out to me. He also stated the problem in their system would be corrected.
*****Since so many people are having such great success in getting their 64-bit discs I figured it would only make sense to point people in the right direction for drivers. Pascallee has compiled most of the drivers for the 1530, which are available for download right here.*****

That's nice to know. They had something similar in the past, but they stopped doing it.
-
I asked about it earlier today when I called Dell in Sweden and the seller said, after hesitating for a split second, that I had to choose. After reading this I'm definitely calling again tomorrow and I won't give up as easily.
I want mine shipped with both 32 and 62 bit. -
Hmmm, I was interested in doing this as well. Do you think you could share the name / number / email of the representative you were talking with?
-
go to dell forum and under software, vista, you can send Dell-Chris M, a private message and give him your service tag, and address to send the disc.
got mine in 2 days. -
Unfortunately, all I have is a first name (not that it helps but it was Jason). All I did was call the higher education support number listed here. Just make sure if you call you choose the respective one for your means of purchase.
Also, not sure if the tech was on the level or not, but he said the reason he couldn't find it listed in their system right off is because it was listed incorrectly. Instead of it being Vista Home Premium it was listed as Vista Home Premiere. According to him and his supervisor the error is going to be submitted and hopefully corrected in the system. -
So are you saying that if I ordered and paid for 32 Bit Home Premium that I can call Dell and request a 64 bit version as well for free?

for ultimate and business, yes
home premium, YMMV -
-
Ah, well my order is in production, so I can't get it quite yet, but once I get it I'll be giving them another call.
-
Paper Wastage, not sure what YMMV means, but according to Dell they should be giving them out for all of them, Home Premium included. One need simply request it from technical support.
Just in case someone had an interest in the item number.Attached Files:

Paper Wastage, I am aware of the quote you are referencing. As far as getting a 64-bit copy of home premium from Dell, I understand results may vary. I've had this laptop since the end of January and have tried multiple times prior to succeeding on my latest endeavor. My main point in posting this info was to let people know that Dell was possibly in the process of changing their current policy. If it helps others receive something they are rightly entitled to, then by all means it's worth my time.
-
Can anyone inform me what is the DELL support number to call for x64 Vista Home Premium.....
I tried calling several times but didnot succeed.... -
I am receiving (it is on it's way) a Vista Premium 64 bit disc from Dell Canada. They (tech support) quibbled, even wanted me to buy it from them at one point, but did eventually send it. So, there seems to be ways. Maybe Dell is finally figuring out that they need to give their customers the choice. Maybe we will even see it as an option alongside colour, processor, memory, hard drive and all the other options

Is it possible to order a Dell system with Vista 64 bit pre-installed? I figured, if you want to go with 64 bit, might as well have them install it. Then you can ask for a (free) 32 bit version on CD in case you want to go that route.
-
No it isn't.

i'm ordering a new 1330 with home premium today. i will see if it ships with the 64-bit DVD. if not, i'll do this to get it
how is the upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit? is it a completely new install, or really a simple upgrade? -
I have not received mine yet (suppose to be here anytime) but, from what I understand you have to do a complete install when going from 32 to 64-bit.
-
that's cool. just need to find the place to round up all the necessary drivers then and i'll be set -
If you do some searches you can find people who have compiled them. Here's a couple to get you started.

The second one is for the XPS 1330, but some of them will still work. Remember the software itself is pretty smart, so it will go out and get a lot of the drivers for you. -
perrylyzr541,
Thanks very much for the information. I already received an order# for my request and waiting for the order# for my wife's m1330.
DELL lists drivers for Vista 64 bit when I enter our service tag numbers. I have to do some reading on 32 vs. 64 bit differences, pros, cons, software compatibility, etc.
Cheers! -
I just PMed Dell-Chris M with the required information, guess we will see.....
-
I only gave the service tag number, since they have your address (at least the one that the computer was shipped to) in their database. -
I PMed Dell- Chris M last night and the order has shipped and will be delivered tomorrow! Hooray!
-
I just PMed him too. Hopefully he doesn't get overwhelmed and stop doing it. I haven't received my computer yet though so I gave him my order number, customer number and shipping info. Hopefully that will work.

I bought an XPS M1330 at Best Buy a month ago and it came with 4 GB of RAM and Vista x64. I've had about 16 BSOD crashes since then but none in the last week. Cisco doesn't support VPN on Vista x64 so I couldn't log into work but I fixed that by installing a Windows XP Home Virtual Machine - kind of a crappy solution but it works for now. Cisco is working on a new VPN solution for Vista x64 but they claim that there are bugs in Vista x64 which are holding them up.
Some third-party devices (like USB stuff) don't provide 64-bit drivers or you have to get them from the website.
When I purchased the system, the Best Buy person warned me that some software doesn't run on x64. I do Windows x64 development and have used Windows x64 since 2004 and know about the typical problems using an x64 system.
All in all, it's a wonderful machine for traveling. I absolutely love the fingerprint reader. The remote control that stows in the computer is great. It's a well-thought out design that packs a lot of technology in a very small and light package. I actually don't use it that often as I spend more time on my 17 inch MacBook Pro but the XPS wins when I'm on the road. -
Ohhh... thanks for the heads up about Cisco VPN mmoy. I HEAVILY use VPN to connect to school's network to have access to articles, library, etc. I guess I'll wait until this is resolved, before installing x64 on my m1330.
By the way, already received the order confirmation for the second one. He is fast -
Man he hasn't even read my message yet and you guys already have yours on the way.
I just checked again and he replied that he needs the service tag so I guess I have to wait for my computer to arrive. It would have been nice to have right away since I don't want to start loading my software until I install it but it is nice to know I can get it. -
My disc arrived this morning via DHL. I can't believe how fast that was!

For the stupid people...... ME
How do I get a copy, I know you have said PM this guy but how?
Also How is 64 bit better than my 32?
Just curious, would love a free upgrade.
Thanks guys. -
40odd min call later, I am being sent one. Thanks for the info! Also the rep was really nice and patient.
-
He sent me an email with an order number informing me that they don't offer drivers for my laptop. It's on the way! I went to order status and attempted to find the order but it says that it can't find it.......
-
I couldn't find the disc order number by searching the number he gave me. I signed in, searched for my laptop's order number, then clicked to view my other orders and it was there.

PM'ed Chris yesterday around 3:00 PM and the DVD is already here. Wow!
-
bump...bump...bump
-
I already installed Vista Home Premium x64 for my M1530 but it nice to have the Dell original DVD media.
So this new policy also apply for people not from US? -
-
Too bad my order got caught up in the holiday traffic.........
-
Haha, brilliant
spent about 20 Min on Dell Chat, and I am being shipped one as well...
btw, I am in the US
thanks for the info perrylyzr541 -
Last time already asked Dell about the x64 DVD but they said they dont have it even for USA.
Some more, the guy said he didnt recommended to use Vista x64 for M1530 because not fully compatible with 32-bit programs, no performance improvement etc etc.
I said I already installed Vista Home Premium x64 (not using Dell OEM DVD) and everything working perfectly fine and even the Vista is faster and snappier.
I think it is the same situation as Dell tries to hide LG screen for M1530.
It will try again and report to you if I manage to get the DVD. -
Hey
Does this apply to the UK ?
