According to the Dell site (US), the estimated shipping date is 01/26/09 for 1640s configured with the higher resolution RGB LED LCD. Are you getting your 1640 earlier than that?

I don't know if I should order a XPS 16 with the lower-resolution display, wait until a 1600x900 display becomes available or order the RGB LED LCD (hoping the resolution is not too high)???

I would not be so sure about that. Yes, Sony has gorgeous displays for sure. But I have a XPS M1330 with the LED display, and it surely looks fine. I would expect the Studio 13 to have a very nice LED WXGA display as well. Should be really close to the Sony one. In any case, it would be difficult to justify the price difference. But the Sony is much lighter.

I'm not sure. I spoke to the Canadian CS and he said 10 business days. Maybe the demand isn't that great up here. Who knows. 10 business days from today will put it pretty close to the 26th anyway.

I'm with you here. The Z just spanks the new Dell in every category that I care about. Blu Ray, High Res, Aspect Ratio, Weight, Keyboard.
Of course the Dell wins out in other categories like more RAM, bigger HDD and most importantly price. So what am I left with? Nothing that meets my needs AND fits my budget (>$2,000). Guess I'll be playing the waiting game along w/ the guy who wants his laptop and wants it now! :D

I just get back with a Dell associate and she confirms me that this laptop, provided you choose the ATI 3670 upgrade, is able to run 2 of Dell 3007WFP displays at FULL resolution! That's right.. 2 30" with 2560x1600 resolution on each.. Combined that with the laptop 1920x1080 RGBLED display and you will have a TON of real estate to gawk upon... :D :D :D

I am so GLAD that DELL made this laptop.. Bye2 Macbook Pro..!! :p :p

mhm. Well, when the z690 appears, maybe we'll both get lucky.

So historically, it usually takes a month-ish for the first coupons for new XPS releases to show up?

    That's true.

If I order the lower resolution, I would probably get it in a few days (according to the site, it's ready to ship). I really need a desktop replacement and the first two reviews (NBR & PC Magazine) have been positive. Actually, PC Mag gave it an "editor's choice", saying it's better than the HP HDX16t, a previous editor's choice. The only issues are:

    - which display should I get? 1600x900 would probably be ideal if it was available.
    - should I wait for a blu-ray writer? (I could buy an external blu-ray writer if I really need one someday)

What is the difference between the Intel 5100 and 5300 WLAN card?

Did you get the 200$ card as well?

Why no discount? Did you try? Reading this forum you should know Dell's pricing is pretty flexible.
I don't buy the whole ram thing, sorry. X has an appetite for ram as well.

It requires quite a lot of bad will to assume that. I treat the service as same quality (although in my country thanks to third party services Apple support is pretty dreaded) but can't ignore the difference in time.

1024 (vertical resolution) to 900 is about the same, yet many people menage to switch from regular desktop monitors (17" and higher) to laptops pretty well.
And I agree about the choice - M1530 had two more resolution in between, hope the new one will catch up.

Not really valid statistic, but it's personal space. I have my own list of brand to avoid.

How many color, resolution or battery options does and MBP have?

And thats a disappointment - the review, not the laptop. Raw numbers don't give much insight.

I wouldn't believe that. Only DisplayPort on it is capable of outputting 2560x1600. Another display would have to be 2048x1536/1920x1200.
And the included LCD panel won't at the same time.

Backlit keyboard is by default on the 1640, isn't it?

The FW11Z has a nice 4200tpm 300Go harddrive... Surely as fast as the 7200tpm from the Dell. Memory is DDR2. Graphic card is also inferior. You can burn blurays for this price, why not, but with the current price of the blank medias, I prefer to buy an external harddrive...

And about the fingerprint reader, except if you encrypt the whole harddrive, I don't really see how this would be safer than a password. Just faster to log in, but that's it.

So I don't really see such a big difference between those. And is the Sony warranty on site?

-FullHD is usefull only if you really need plenty of space, very good colors and are very picky with movie image quality when watching Blurays...

-bluray writer? I find them too expensive for the moment. You can buy cheaps external harddrives which are much faster to use and can hold 10 to 20 blurays. I'm seldom burning CDs now that you have those harddrives and big USB sticks, so BR burner does not seem like a hot seller to me.

    -5100 is not "b" compatible I think.

I had asked that Rep 4 times and she confirmed to me that you can attached 1 at the HDMI port and the other at the DisplayPort port.. These monitors would be able to run at their native resolution of 2560x1600 each..

You need converter cable for each in order for them to work though.. (DVI to HDMI and DVI to DisplayPort)...

She also confirmed to me that your primary display, which is your laptop would still be functioning even when these 2 monitors are plugged together..

I know that it sounded too good to be true, thus I had asked her 4 times to confirm..

The 5300 is better. Like the old 4965 abgn card, it has three 3 antennas which offers better wifi range than the 5100 which has only 2 antenna.

    See here for a comparison:

Well, HDMI can theoretically support 2560x1600 but needs a 1.3 connection.
Setup guide says the laptop has HDMI 1.2.

I have two monitors connected to my E6400 and can't use them along with the primary lcd. It's not a same gpu, but it is a pretty common thing.

Get that in writing - chat session log or whatever. If it works - good for you. If not, you have an angle to work on a return/discount.

Guys, anybody knows of any 13" notebook with slot-loading Blu-ray reader? Thanks!

I remember that original slides that appeared in August, indicated that 1340 comes with slot-loading Blu-ray, but apparently it doesn't. Or at least, it doesn't YET. Just wonder if there are any alternatives or the technology is non-existent yet (thin drives).

Thanks risbac! That would be awesome. For me 1340 is almost a perfect notebook, I only need Blu-ray (well, 9-cell battery would be good, and more color options, but those are not essential). I will wait some more, since it's not urgent for me at the moment, but as soon as Dell offers Blu-ray on 1340 and the first coupons appear, i'm buying it right away! :)

It doesn't seem to be available yet on Dell Canada's website.

I'm not sure how I feel about the new Studio XPS line-up, I don't like the way that the screen hinge looks... as if its' a regular hinge bolted onto the chassis and the display...

Had a Dell rep tell me that with the M1330/M1530, the first online promos went out within a few weeks of release. So there's that.

Suppose there will be any luck for a backlit keyboard (not a biggie) or Intel wifi (biggie) in the XPS 13? I don't know if these online configs will change much.

But backlit keyboard is a default option in 1340 (even though it doesn't mention it on the configuration pages). You can read about that in the Design section:
    Simply luminescent
The Studio XPS 13 shines a light on features that matter. Its backlit keyboard and touch pad buttons are easy to use, day or night. Capacitive multimedia buttons also glow white when activated.

Also, are you saying Intel Wi-Fi is better than Dell Wi-Fi, and why?

If I see some good reviews I am pretty sure I am going to buy the 1340.

    However,………..

Is there any evidence there will be an XPS 14? If so can anybody make an educated guess as to when?

Also, do you think there will be a significant price drop on the 1530?.....It is still a great machine after all…….

    Cheers

I don't think sizes other than 13 or 16 will be available. Otherwise, we'd see them in those original slides OR Dell would have announced them along with these. Even if they appear, it's at minimum 6 months down the road or more. I think Studio XPS line is a replacement for XPS, which probably soon will be discontinued. I think, 1530 is still a good machine, even though older architecture.

If the price came down on the 1530 (as it should) I'd buy another one! These new machines do look really slick but nothing wows me enough to jump on the wagon at this time. And you get more pixels on the 1530 vs the 1640. :p

Intel WiFi has the advantage of always being able to use the latest drivers from http://support.intel.com, which are updated regulary and for years to come.
I think driver support for Dell WLAN modules is quite good though too.
(Compared to crap like Sony which pretty much never updates any driver on the support site unless it really has to)

Intel 5100: connectors for 2 antennas
Intel 5300: connectors for 3 antennas
    Dell 11n: unknown, 2 or 3 antennas

Hardware and performance wise, I'd clearly choose the Dell 11n (which is Broadcom I believe) over the Intel 5100 (which has known performance problems due to it's 2 antennas). 5300 vs. Broadcom might be closer. It would suck however if Dell were to sell you the 5300 and then only connects 2 antennas to it... I think the M1330 only had 2, even though some WiFi cards sold could do more.

The performance drawback with 2 antennas is mostly an Intel problem though.

So true. I have VERY grave doubts of BluRay writing will ever become popular. Prices for the drives will certainly fall, but media will most likely stay expensive for a LONG time if not ever. Remember how long it took for DVD+-DL media to become cheap? Took ages and is still expensive compared to harddrives. Also optical media have serious burn-quality issues and often also long-term-storage problems. Oh and don't forget that burning a BluRay double layer media will take HOURS.

Optical media is deader than dead, get over it and buy harddrives.

Yeah, but then again, the lack of Montevina on the M1330 / M1530 is the very reason why I did not jump on that 30% coupon pre-Christmas for those notebooks.

I realize that all things technology outdate themselves before you can say "are you ****ting me?", but I'd hate to buy previous-platform stuff when the successor is already at retail.

    Seconded. I wanna see.

XPS 1340 comes with max 4 GB or RAM. Anybody knows what is the max amount it can support? Will it support 8 GB if I add it later myself? Thanks!
