I would rather he posts something about the Studio XPS in this thread. The minute he posts about why he left OSX this thread will burn in hell.
-
There is nothing anyone can post about Studio XPS that will be useful at this point. You can simply go look at specs and some reviews.
This thread shouldn't go to hell... but then again Apple iBoys are always on the look out for some prey... -
Once the Studio XPS 13 & 16 owner's threads begin, this thread's days/hours will be numbered. That should happen soon.
-
Did anyone who posted yesterday that thought it was due to arrive today actually get theirs?
Mine was ordered on the 10th and is still in production -
i can post my reasons and also keep it on topic
while macs are cool and fun to use, i got tired of constantly seeing things i wanted that were windows only. the fact is, ~75% of people in the world use windows, so 75% of the exciting software and hardware will be primarily windows based.
apple fanboys say: what about boot camp, parallels and vmware? i've used them. i've had xp, vista and windows 7 on my macbook to try to keep myself sane, but it none of them were really that great. i don't like the virtualization apps. when i want to use a windows computer, i want to use a windows computer, not some little window inside osx that i have to constantly manage and rework, giving up more ram and disk space to do what i want to do. boot camp runs windows really inefficiently and makes the fan speed up and gets really hot even when i have no applications running. the battery lasts less than half the time running windows than it does osx.
osx is cool looking and useable, but it doesn't have enough substance. apple's slogan should be: hey check out this cool little thing i don't really have any use for.
if you just want to play around, have a nice looking computer, and you can afford their exorbitant prices, then apple's not that bad
but if you want usability and practicality, for less money, get a windows based pc
style is very important to me. i'm not really certain why. i know it really shouldn't matter at all as long as the computer can do what i want it to. this is the only aspect i would concede to apple. they make great looking, fashionable stuff.
i need a new laptop and i really wanted a pc, but the new macbooks were really tempting. in the end it was the great looking new studio xps's that swayed me. finally a pc that tries to compete with apples style. i love the way my 1340 is going to look and i know i'll love using it. -
What types of programs/software are you talking about?

SHIPPED!
My XPS 1640 shipped today. I ordered on 1/12 with an ESD of 1/29. My status was recently updated in the Dell system to say it shipped today (1/21), but they did not provide tracking info yet. I didn't spring for overnight shipping so I'm guessing it will arrive on Friday or (gasp) Monday.
I ordered RGBLED Screen / P8600 / 4GB / 320GB / Blu-Ray / 5300 Wireless / Bluetooth
Did I mention that when I ordered, I got both my EPP discount AND the $200 gift card?

and, why did you upgrade to the 5300 wireless?Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Awesome  !!!!! You will be able to see your tracking number in the morning.
BUT, you can call a Dell Rep and they can verbally give you your tracking number
Yup! You got a great deal w/EPP & GC! I'm sure I will be able to snag something like yours, when the Dell Adamo 13 is availi' ~ and I can finally order
I wonder if you are the first person who 1640 has shipped here on the forum!
Was your original ESD...1/27?

Very nice. I wish I had ordered earlier, would have saved a ton of money. I ordered it on the 15th and got to boxing yesterday. ESD set at 2/03...hopefully not THAT long. Please have some pictures for those of us still waiting.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015

It will prob's ship before the ESD..
That is normally overstimated.

so... did you get that tracking info from dell reps? i mean cuz i think they might have the wrong address. Just give me the order number and ill call dell up and make sure fedex ships to my house *cough* i mean, you address.. lol
btw i thought that some1 here had overnight shipping, i wonder if their lappie shipped today as well?Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Gah my order date was the 10th and eta ship date was the 28th you beat me
Mine is not as loaded as yours wonder if they had a few in production with all bells and whistles
-
Yes, I'll take photos. It's a 30th birthday present for my wife so you might get some bonus unwrapping pics.
I honestly don't know a thing about wireless cards, I did a couple google searches, assumed the 5300 was "better," and the cost was cheap compared to the total I was spending so I just added it.
My total cost ended up being about $1655 including $100+ of tax. Then I get the $200 shopping spree extravaganza later too. Maybe I'll get a better, wireless-n router! woo hoo! -
Just awesome.really.just awesome.
Cin. -
Congrats! Excellent price. I really think that there's no other notebook available now that could compare to it spec-wise and price-wise. And of course no Apple in the world is even remotely close to this Dell.
-
OK - I just called about 5 different Dell phone numbers to try to get my tracking number. Regardless of my pleas, they keep transferring me back to the EPP area which closed at 7pm CT. So, unfortunately, I won't be able to route that package to your home fxny12004. So sorry!
I'll check again in the AM and hopefully have the firm ETA. My fingers are crossed for Friday - the info online says:
Shipping Method: 3-5 Business Days
Shipped Date: 1/21/2009
Est. Delivery Date: 1/23/2009
Carrier: Data Temporarily Unavailable
Tracking Number: Data Temporarily Unavailable -
Funny thing is that I'm typing this on my MacBook Pro. I probably just got myself kicked off the forum, didn't I?
At least I have boot camp with Vista Ultimate on my other partition!
-
Bah. They should've been able to give you a Tracking Number. When I was waiting on my 1530, I spoke with a regular Dell Rep...vs. my EPP Rep., and they gave me my tracking number.
That's the one thing I dislike of Dell, is that sometimes the Rep's can't take ownership and handle the phone call themselves *the first time , vs. sending it all over the realm of Dell.
It's too bad this happened for you. But, that information should be there first thing in the AM for you. Did you send up for the e-mail notifications?
Cin. -
My original ESD was 1/29. Maybe they got tired of me requesting order status online every hour for the last 2 weeks and decided to ship mine first?
-
Whats the difference between those 2 LCD screen options ? Which one would deliver better quality and HD experience?
Edge-to-edge Glossy 13.3 inch WXGA CCFL LCD display
Edge-to-edge Glossy 13.3 inch WXGA WLED LCD display
Also anyone knows if there is any student discounts for Dell UK ?
Thx -
has the xps13 only got 2 usb ports?
-
I couldn't even get to a "regular" dell rep. When I didn't put in my order number, they transferred me to a friggin' receptionist who routed my call back to the (closed) EPP call center. I suppose I could have claimed I wanted to order a new computer, but I gave up.
Yes, the "take ownership" is a big deal. I have the opportunity to listen to customer/client calls once in a while in my job. It's a good dose of reality to hear how customers are treated at times. -
I bet you did get pushed to the front!!!
I think my past 2 orders did to! LOL
Oish. I wonder why that didnt' happen to me? You could try Dell Chat if you wanted...Dell Chat is amazing...
<<<<<note that. LOL.
Yeah..being *bounced* like you were, is not fun.
Good CService takes care of it the first time..

Went into "Shipped" status 5 minutes ago.
Purchased on 1/12.
ESD 1/29.
$1798 shipped. Will receive $200 gift card in 6-8 weeks. -
Well Thraak, sounds like you might have the honor of starting the Studio XPS Owners Thread! Bring on the PICS and an actual Owners Review (By Proxy as I guess it will be your wifes system).
-
Or Will the Honor go to Bill.B??? Stay Tuned to find out.
-
I'm sure that within the next 24 hours there will be alot more "shipped" orders.
I opted to go with the upgraded T9400 processor and RGBled LCD screen but did not go with Blu-Ray. I hope that I don't regret it but I am planning on using this laptop mainly for photo editing and website work.
I know Adobe cs3 will work good but I'm not sure if the graphics will support cs4.
I will be using the Belkin N+ wireless router.
I also purchased the Belkin 17" messenger bag, not knowing how the 15" bag would fit. I also picked up the Dell 5 button BT mouse.
Good Luck everyone,
Thraak -
Is a discount given if you have a DPA or open a DPA at checkout? I'd pay for the laptop in full at once but if it gives a discount I might as well open one [and then close afterwards] . I thought there was an additional 4% off but maybe that was just a promotional thing?
-
I am not the poster you were referring too but i went for the 5300 too because i wander around the house a lot as well as staying in hotels and i figured the tri antenna would help a bit there.
-
4% is if you have EPP
3% is for non EPP members
You can still get the 3% at checkout...if your not EPP...click pay by credit card and you should get the *Save an additional 3% by paying with Dell DPA* or something like that.
Cin. -
I'm a college student so that covers EPP but I really wish they would have a 25% coupon.
I can dream, yeah? -
Oh a 25% coupon across the board for all the models would be great!
Especially the ones that haven't been released yet
Now, I can dream too!
Cin. -
I get to the point where I register for the DPA [but I don't finish because I'm not ready to buy yet] but I don't see anywhere where it mentions the discount. You think something like that would be advertised.
-
Oh wait..are you in the EPP site, or consumer?
Cin. -
consumer.
I'll try it through the university. -
It's currently giving me a loop error when I try to go to my cart.
-
Well even on the consumer site you should see this at check out:
the 3% when electing to pay by Credit Card!
Cin. -
They can still get it if they want to though. Bare minimum you'd need to overright the drive with pseduorandom data a few times, and that's assuming the system functioned well enough to do that.
Yeah...I originally was going to get a 4 year with complete care warrenty, but decided against it with this. Honestly...because of that low end ATi GPU, I'm not real happy with this system at all, so I'm just going to use it I guess, push it hard, and probably either fall in love with it and use it for years (like all my Dell desktops), or...I don't know, just figure it wasn't much more than the Asus I'd also looked at. Would have added 25% to the price for the super duper warranty, so...
I haven't run into anything too weird on these forums, but GEEZ are some of the people nuts on Apple.com. I was there looking for some info, and dropped into a thread, added a post. Three people are jumping all over me, now going off on all kinds of tangents about how Macs are just as cheap as Windows PCs...it's like I paid over $1000 less for this 1640 than I would have an equivalent Mac, and I'm sorry, the Mac would NOT be more reliable, is NOT better built, does NOT use magical components, etc., etc.
CCFL is traditional florescent lighting that all notebooks until recently had, and most monitors and TVs have. LED is...uh...LED lighting. The advantages include:
-lasts longer without fading (florescent gets noticeably dimmer over time), and should last longer too
-draws less power
-usually brighter
-usually display a wider color gamut
-presumably doesn't emit UV radiation
-no mercury
Disadvantage is basically just that it costs more, but for me, LED was a requirement (which didn't leave me with too many options). -
anybody's 1340 close to shipping? all the early ones seem to be 1640s
i ordered a 1340 on the 8th and i don't think mine is really that close to shipping. -
The Studio XPS doesn't have an intel wireless card option only:
Dell Wireless 1510 802.11n Half Mini-Card
and
Dell Wireless 1515 802.11n Half Mini-Card
Which one is better since there is no intel option? -
The 1640 has this option: Intel WiFi Link 5300 802.11AGN Half Mini Card
-
In my case last year, it was underestimated by 2-3 weeks. I finally decided to cancel my M1530 order after waiting 4 weeks plus (April-May). I hope if I order a XPS 16, it will be different this time.
-
Anyone getting the SSD option? Im very interested in the make and model. If its a Samsung 2.5 128gb, then its most likely be 90MB/s read and 70MB/s write.
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/products/flash/ssd/2008/product/lineup.html -
I would hope to ~ this is a huge selling Line for Dell. You would think they had solved those querks from before. Hope.
Cin
-
I believe it's a Samsung SSD. I'm not sure about the model (if there is more than one).
-
I'm thinking of getting the SSD. I hope someone can fill us in on the details...

My system is on the 3rd day of the boxing stage. I maxed out all the hardware but ram (4gig only) and got the x-fi sound card. I ordered on Jan. 12 2009. The first sales rep i talked to was a total douche. He quoted me 2,288 with tax and everything. I hung up and him and called a friends dell representative that helped with his purchase and got 2,057.25 . My ESD is Jan 29 2009. hopefully the guys at dell finish packing my system soon so they can ship it to me.
Dell Studio XPS 1340/1640 now available for purchase on Dell's site !!!
