I just benchmarked my system and i originally got 2,000 with 3DMark 06. But after installing new drivers i got 4,857! And in PCMark 05 i got 4,893, although i need to re-test that one because it was lower than i should have gotten i think and i installed new drivers for my pc like i said. But for 3DMark 06 getting 4,857 is much better than the reviews which it got around 4,200 i believe.

LOL 2000? Stock? Those driver must have sucked.
Close to 5,000 is accurate thats what i have seen people(on the forum) get around.
Congrats on the notebook though
-
yeah it's nice... much better than my old computer! And yeah 2,000 was a joke, especially in game, i couldn't even put shadows or AA on in COD: WaW, i just played it and i can max it out!
-
hi where do u get the updates for the driver? I have the ATI control center 8.5 i think. i dowloaded the 9.0 version but it didnt change anything..still says 8.5
-
I originally got 4300 and after installing new drivers (CCC 9.2) I got 4400 in 3DMark06. My XPS16 has C2D [email protected], 4GB DDR3 and also ATI HD3670.
So what drivers did you used that is your score so high? -
Something not right there. I get 4400 on my 1530 with 8600m gt, t8300 and 3gb ddr2. You really should be getting much more as all your specs are better.
BTW how much difference do 3d Mark06 scores of +/- 500 make in gaming ? -
What resolution are you guys running your 3D Mark06? Higher resolution means lower score, right?
-
I used default settings 1280x1024
-
I used all default settings and drivers from the dell website, there is something wrong though, because a right after i ran these tests i ran COD: WaW and it ran fine on max settings, then after about 15 minutes it started to play really laggy, then i re-checked my score and got around 3,200? I think i need to find some different drivers. Where do you find 9.2 at?

Is it over heating and down-clocking, by chance?
-
i think that's what it is doing, but it hasn't done it today yet, is there a way to stop that?
-
If there is, you don't want to. Preventing it from down-clocking will seriously overheat your computer. You might try under-volting or a laptop cooler. Or if you're the adventurous type, check the thermal paste and possibly void your warranty by reapplying some. (Wouldn't recommend the paste thing).

Under-volting seems to be an easy thing to do with generally good results. Also, no loss in performance makes it a win-win. It is an additional program windows has to start when it boots up, the the lower heat and increased battery life would definitely make it a positive thing. -
Now I understand why you had higher 3DMark06 score. You have 720p display which allows at maximum 1366x768 (which is about 1 049 088 points) so 3DMark06 probably used this maximum as default. My display is 1080p (1920x1080) and in my case 3DMark06 used as default resolution 1280x1024 (which is 1 310 720 points). So I had lower 3DMark06 score (4400) than you had (4800) because I used higher resolution and 3DMark06 had to draw more points in my case.
I found those Mobile Catalist 9.2 at Alienware forum. -
You could use a laptop cooler to reduce overheating.
-
Right. For almost all of the reviews I read for 1640, they tested 3D Mark 06 using the 1280x800 resolution, and it usually scored around 4800.
-
I installed the newest ati drivers, and modded them using Mobility Modder. I got 4995, and 4998. Before that I think I scored around 4200, which was what all the reviewers got with the crappy Dell drivers.
-
Thanks for all of the input, and since i had to use a "free" or "basic" version of 3DMark 06 it was limited to only 1280x800 so unless you bought it Pitrs81 then it was ran at the same as mine. Do you have the latest drivers?

Brendanmurphy Your Worst Nightmare
I got 4200 on 3dmark and i have a 2.4 ghz proccessor
-
I did these benchmarks with driver 8.5 btw, i just installed the 9.2 mod and i'm hoping it will work (there have been some probs with it) but if not i'll get the 9.1 and i will post scores here if they are higher!

....hm interesting. Any chance it was running on battery life?
As soon as for some reason your notebook hits battery life your GPU downclocks quite a bit. Is this still happening or was that just once? -
It just happened once since i installed the 8.12 drivers, i'm installing 9.1 modded drivers right now and i'm hoping to see some increase. But it hasn't happened since, and i notcie the gpu slows down once on battery power, it's a setting in catlyst manager, you can turn it off if you want i believe.
