I have a Dell Studio XPS 16 laptop with a P8600 (2.4 G, 25W) cpu. I am wondering if the T9900 (3.06G, 35W) could be substituted socket wise and if the existing cooling system can handle the extra 10 watts.

    Thanks.

Assuming the bios does support it, and it should but isn't guaranteed the T9900 is socket and chipset compatible with your laptop.

Depending on your budget a T9800 might be cheaper and more available on the used market. Buying a C2D new is often halfway to a better laptop, but there are deals to be had.

Not familiar with your laptop but I did a P7450 to T9600 swap and while both idle and load temperatures are higher id say they're only about 10C or so higher which can be significant but not the end of the world either.

Both the P8600 and the T9900 are "P" sockets so I think I am good there. But, the issue you raised with the BIOS is interesting, I have the A14 BIOS. Does anyone know if that will support the T9900?

There are three ways of answering the bios question. If someone has done the swap, the laptop was offered with it, or someone who knows how to dump the microcodes from the bios and check.

I believe though if the laptop came with a T9600 or T9800 as an option from dell then the i believe T9900 would work just fine. I never knew what the exact differences were to the bios, dont think you will have a problem but its possible thats all i wanted to point out.
