I'm looking at the new Studio XPS 16 (1645, I think... or maybe 1647?) for college. The main draw to the computer was the optional 16.0" RGBLED screen, which had phenomenal reviews. I've been playing with the configurator on the Dell site for the past few days, and while the description of the laptop says that the 16.0" RGBLED screen is available, you can't actually add it to the laptop in the configurator. I talked to a service rep today about it and he said that it was discontinued within the past month. Is this true?? Why would they discontinue a screen that had such high reviews? I don't know if I trust the salesman because he didn't answer any of my questions regarding differences in the screens and wasn't very helpful overall. I really wanted that screen for photo editing (since it could display an extremely high % of the color gamut) but now I'm not sure what to do... I don't know anything about the WLED screen that's offered (the 1080p version) or the B+RG LED screen offered on the Studio 17 (which was the other laptop that I was looking at). Does anyone know how those two monitors compare to the 16.0" RGBLED screen that used to be available on the XPS 16? What are the differences?

Please be patient with me, I'm not knowledgeable at all when it comes to computers. Thanks a ton for your help!!

I was on the Dell UK website last week and specing up a XPS 16 and you couldn't choose RGBLEG or bluray drive. The options just vanished, this week they are back on again. So I wouldn't trust the guy you spoke to because the RGBLED is a big selling point, either give it a couple of weeks and check back, or call again and try get a supervisor with some more knowledge/experience.

You could also post on the Dell forums, on "which dell should I buy".

I couldn't tell you about the studio 17 screen.

So I talked to a different sales person, and he said that the screens are not available at the moment, but they're going to be in the future. He didn't give a time frame, so I guess I'm going to have to check every day until they have them in stock again. Hopefully that's before the $379.00 discount ends!

Yeah hopefully you can get it before the discount ends, as the screen is amazing! And well worth it. Though the discount is great too!

Don't forget to look into discounts because you are a student. It was good for 7% off for me.

Does anyone know anything about the 15.6" WLED screen? I've heard that the RGBLED is way better, so is the WLED that bad (at least in comparison)?

    I think ONLY in comparison.

I have the WLED and it isn't BAD at all.

I also have the WLED 1920*1080 screen... best screen I've used to this day.

So is the WLED 900p model the only screen with the plastic-covered screen??

My 1080p WLED screen is also plastic-covered. A little disappointing, but much better for weight than a glass cover.

Man I'd love to have the glass screen even with the weight.... speaking of weight and portability though, I think I am going to get a 6-cell battery soon.....

I also have the WLED 1920x1080 screen. It's not bad by any means. The reviews praise the RGBLED screen because it is just that good. It wasn't to discredit Dell's other offerings though. I think most people would probably be happy with either screen. They're better than a lot of other screens on the market. I compared several before purchasing.

Indeed... this screen is bright and crisp, with great contrast. And seriously... 1920x1080 in a 15.6" screen is insanely awesome!

Agreed. It's VERY bright, colors are amazing, no saturation like the RGB display, and best of all NO FLICKERING!
