    http://www.gadgetfolder.com/dell-studio-xps-16-with-latest-core-i7-820qm-mobile-processor.html

They say it's available now... But it isn't on the site yet. I know the platform is released in a couple of days, so these people probably are just a bit off.

My XPS 16 is still in the mail on it's way to me. Now I'm seriously thinking about returning it and waiting... I pulled the trigger knowing DX11 hardware was right around the corner.. But as it's a laptop and not my main gaming machine I figured it wouldn't matter much as the 4670 is still a beast and can handle all the new windows 7 features. Transcoding and DirectD2 FTW! haha... Anyhow..

Should I go ahead and return it or keep it? I know the desktop counterpart for i7 is a beast.. I still love my Q6600 setup though and will stick with that for a year or so more (will get a new DX11 GPU tho).. but I'm spending a butt load on this laptop and now I'm wondering if I made the wrong choice to buy now when I should probably wait a week or two..

Depending on your budget, you would probably want to return it and get the i7 (If it is really just around the corner)

It'll probably surface when Win7 comes out. HP has a new line coming out also.

    Answer: WAIT! WAIT! WAIT! WAIT!

    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2009/09/18/intel-core-i7-for-laptops-first-review

What you are seeing there is the low end i7 at 1.7Ghz completely ***ch slapping the high end Core 2 quad core 2.53Ghz. And the simple normal dual core processors it decimates as if it was an AMD processor.

    Then there is battery life....

I'm in the market for a new laptop. There is NO way in heck I'm going to get a new laptop without the i7 in it.

The Core 2's still run fine right now. The performance increase is only going to be seen if you do lots of encoding/CPU dependent tasks. Gaming/normal use (like multitasking) wont be affected.

I'm going to enjoy my hiccup-free machine for another couple of years, and get something that makes the i7's look silly.

If you can wait then get the Core i7.

Note though, the Core i7 in that benchmark is the 870 and the original posted mentioned the 820 which of course will be slower.

    Core i7 + Windows 7 = :)

Errm, what GPU is included alongside that Pentium D? I'm surprised a T6600 Core 2 Duo is doing worse than a 3.0 GHz Pentium D.

The i7-820QM seems to be priced at 546 USD (in 1k quantities), the top-of-the-line i7-920-XM will be more like 1000 USD or so, it all depends on your budget...

AFAIK there is at present no i7-870QM processor in i7 Mobile family (just i7-720QM, i7-820QM and i7-920XM) and the tested processor is mentioned as "i7-820QM" everywhere in the text of the review.
Moreover, the picture displaying CPU-Z window indicates it as "Q 820".
So I think the "i7-870QM" in benchmark results images is just a mistake.

Agree on the fact that, if possible, is more convenient to wait for i7 and Windows 7 too.
They should be a well-matched couple!

Ok I decided to keep what I'm getting. Windows 7 will run flawless on the Core2 Duo 2.4ghz with 4gb of ddr3.

If it were an i7/DX11 combo I would have waited. But DX11 GPU's won't hit laptops for 6 months I bet. DX10 GPU's took about 6 months to hit laptops.

I got some prices and the i7 upgrade through Dell is about $600.

My sig rig (one coming) was only $1490 shipped (after $500 off from a huge sale) so I can't complain. Should be more than fast enough for a couple years.

I keep my desktop up to date for hardcore gaming. (I build and OC them for a living).

That's what I'm thinking. Mine should arrive in a week. I don't want to wait any longer...it's already been 2 weeks already. If I wait and then order it would take another 6 weeks I'm sure.
Also the power consumption would be way up with the i7. The Intel P8600 would only take 25W and I can upgrade that to a P9600 to get 6MB L2 and still be at 25W or upgrade to something better if more P processors are coming out.

If it would come with DX11...different story.

I wouldn't get an i7 just on power consumption alone.

Just another incremental speed boost on certain applications that can use it, otherwise no difference on day to day computing. Keep the XPS16 and add a SSD hard drive later on when they come down in price and see a real speed boost for a lot less money.

30 days. Honestly unless you absolutely need a new system now we are talking one month as of today. The chip I referenced in the above benchmarks is the LOW END processor that spanks even Intel's high end mobile Core 2 Quad.
For those who are saying well you don't need a quad because nothing uses a quad core processor. WRONG. Windows 7 has been designed with multi core processors in mind.

    Vista was too.

For there to be any significant performance gain, the application needs to be multi-core aware, specifically quad core aware in this case.

Surf is right, and too many applications have yet to even take advantage of dual core. Quad cores will be utilized in the next year or two probably, but even then you are talking about a difference that is only made when the CPU is being stressed at 100%. In general usage (like multitasking) this translates to fractions of a second. In hardcore encoding/computation tasks you are talking about 10 seconds if the app supports the quad threading.

And the 30 day return period is for defects. You can return a functional product as well, but you will pay a 15% restocking fee.

You can't expect an OEM to configure a product and then take it back no questions asked, being forced to take a loss on it by selling on the Outlet with refurbs.

Since I paid with my Dell Prefered account I am able to return it no questions asked and not restocking fee IF I don't open it. Found that out..

But I'm keeping it. Core2 Duo with 4GB of DDR3 is fast enough.

My desktop however I spend entirely way to much money in... My laptop will be my portable gamer/web/etc. WoW and Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 pretty much is all I'm going to run on it.

My Quad I have OC'ed the hell out of and even at stock speeds it doesn't even come close to slowing down. Q6600 @ 3.6GHz ftw. It chews and spits out anything I throw at it. I had an 8800Ultra moved to a 9800GTX. Now I'm waiting for nVidia to get off their asses and bring out their first gen DX11 cards.

They have. It's called Alienware. They are in the midst of revamping the line up for DX11 and i7 as we speak.

The new Alienware M15x that was announced was a joke.

If all they have up their sleeves is a Core i7 and a GTX 260m option for a $2000 15 incher that weighs 9 LBS, they are showing up way late to the party.

    Sager is pre-ordering for a Core i7, GTX 280m STANDARD, 7.4 LBS 15 incher starting under $1700.

Seriously, Dell blew it on this generation M15x.

    Uh, what?

I said shipping in mid-to-late October. Studio 15 is the earliest at October 15th and Studio 17 is the latest with October 28th....And that's if you order right now.

This can be a big lead time, I think.

Not exactly. A regular Studio 17 ships on the 1st of October, while the i7 version ships on the 28th. A few weeks here is four times the wait.

If you're waiting anyways, though, it probably isn't that bad.

Sheesh, with that long of a wait, they might as well offer them with the option of having Windows 7 installed instead of Vista!

Of course, they are probably just overestimating so they won't have so many people complaining about delays.

Studio XPS 16, here I come!!!

That's very true. I got mine a week early. I don't know, though, if that cut time will translate to the new systems.

It may well be taking into the account the massive amount of orders that will be placed.
