Hey guys, I have a Dell Studio XPS 1640 (specs in sig) and it has a peculiar problem. I don't use sleep or hibernate when i keep a laptop on. If i don't it off, i just keep it on, use it, then leave and do other things. the screen will automatically dim 10 minutes and then the display shuts off at 15 minutes. but the sleep function is left off. when i come back, i should be able to just move my mouse around a few times and the display should turn on and i'm ready to get back to what i was doing.

the problem now is that when i move my mouse around, my display will turn on but i won't be able to do anything else. everything is completely frozen. mouse will still be able to move around. the HDD activity light on the bottom left of the laptop doesn't blink. i'll hit CTRL, ALT, DEL but nothing happens. eventually, the mouse freezes too. the only way out is to hold the power button, shut down and then start up again.

what can the problem possibly be? mind you, this doesn't happen every time but i would say almost occurs 50%. also, everything else works just fine. it's just this problem. now i'm afraid to do anything important and leave it unfinished for the fear of coming back to a frozen laptop. suggestions? thanks!

Holy crap, mine just started doing this too recently. I can not figure it out. Mine does the same thing, mine does go to sleep though. this is very random and when i hit the track pad it wakes up and sometimes the mouse doesn't move sometimes it does but I can't do anything. A few minutes later it comes alive and everything is fine. Sometimes I do have to hit the power button and shut it down then power back up. Let me know if you find out anything please!

Try reinstalling Windows. Sounds like a software problem and not hardware.

Are you guys using the video driver directly from ATI? Or Dell's driver?

I had an issue where my system didn't wake properly, I was using the latest drivers from ATI. I switched back to the Dell driver, all is fine now.
