All,
My power adapter has broken and I need to replace it for my 1640, The model number currently is PA-10 1900-02d2 but I want a slimline adapter not the big 1 that has broken. I have an XPS 1645 also which has a PA-3E 19.5V 4.62A 90W HA90PE1-00 slimline adapter Would this adapter work for the 1640 without causing damage?
It's very confusing are there seems to be a lot of model number, I have been searching ebay and so far I have seen HA90PE1-00 , FA90PE1-00, DA90PE3-00 all for the XPS 16 and all slimeline, what is the difference of all these? or are they all the same
Regards,
Brian.

From what I understand, the adapters that Dell ships with its laptops are interchangeable. I've read that the 90w slim, 90w brick, 130w, or even 230w (shipped with certain Dell business laptops) will all work, and will only draw the power that is needed, but haven't tried myself (no extra Dell adapters lying around).
If you use an adapter that draws LESS power than the laptop requires, this will also work, but the laptop's performance will be reduced whenever it would need more power. Do you know that the XPS 1645 should be using the 130w adapter? ( http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19320784.aspx) All XPS 1645 hardware configurations are capable of drawing more than 90w (when using the 130w adapter) so it would be beneficial to get that adapter for the XPS 1645 (free). While requesting that adapter you can ask if you can keep the 90w although they usually want the old one back.. -
Sorry....I made a mistake, I have the XPS 1647 which has the i5 processor, would you still recommend the 130w power adapter for that model?
Thanks and Regards,
Brian. -
I fixed the link in my first post now - it does say that the 130w adapter is also for the XPS 1647. I'd say it would be worth requesting (although the performance improvement may not be as noticeable as in the XPS 1645).
