    Dell Studio XPS 1645 Display not working

    My Dell Studio XPS 1645 came with ATI HD4670 graphics & windows 7 Pro 64bit. Last year I updated to windows 8 & eventually to 8.1. After upgrading to win 8. There was only beta driver available for the graphics card. Its
    was working fine, very rarely the video driver crashes & return to normal. But last week While I was using my system it got crashed with bluescreen error - VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE ...atimkag.sys.. error. After that, my laptop
    display not working, not even bios screen/dell logo @ startup. just blank.So when I connected to external monitor through VGA port. I was able to see the screen with lots of strange lines & colors, dots, etc.. ( random). & @ the welcome screen it crashes again showing the same error.Once when I connected via HDMI port, the laptop display became white. & thats it.Also when i ran motherboard diagnostics, during the video card test- it showd color lines & asked me it is
    visible. - Yes it is visible but accompanied with random dots, lines,etc. So what caused this problem & what is the solution ???????

    Is there any problem with the motherboard ? Will replacing the motherboard solve the problem ??

    Please help me. I'm in deep trouble.

    I doubt even a beta driver would cause those issues. You can always remove and re-install the driver or try native VGA drivers, but really sounds like a video card failure (MB). Might be able to find one on eBay or through Dell, although it can get pricey. Gotta look at the cost of the part vs how much the system is worth as well.

    I agree; if you're not getting to even the BIOS screen, it's definitely some sort of hardware failure, not a driver issue.

    This is the exact issue I had with my Studio 1558 three weeks ago, but on Win7. Motherbard was replaced under warranty within 2 days. But the next week the same issue cropped up, this time Dell offered me a replacement laptop instead.

    As for the issue itself, error message on BSOD was exactly as yours, and connecting to an external monitor via VGA led to glitchy video exactly like yours. Running diagnostics (hold fn while powering on) led to error code 2000-0321 (clicky: How to use ePSA error codes to identify next steps troubleshooting your system. | Dell). But turning on while holding "D" displayed the White, R, G, B colours perfectly.

    They didn't give me any details about the exact cause (gpu related, somewhere else on the mobo, display cable, display itself etc) other than the fact that they would need to replace the mobo as a part of the fix. If your laptop mobo is available at a reasonable price then you could try that, but if it costs a lot then you might be better off getting a new laptop or getting it looked at by some professional servicing agency or dell themselves.
